Your opinions - OB's in the hospital

I just talked to my doula, and found out that right now an OB is not required to be on the floor at my hospital. Honestly, it doesn't bug me.  I figure the likelihood of rupture is pretty slim, and I thought they had medical residents there... aih... I guess i need to think about it in general a bit and ask a few more questions (this was a chance meeting and quick conversation).  Anyhow - would that concern you?

    I gave birth at a teaching hospital so I always had one doctor on the floor and the residents. I guess that sounds odd to me but I really know nothing about general hospital policies.

    Do they say where the OB might be? Like are they at the hospital but just not on the floor? 

    Although risk of rupture is rare, what if any cause for an emergency c/s arises for any patient, not just vbacs? I thought that the standard of care requires a hospital to be able to get a baby out in a certain amount of time. If there isn't even a doctor there, that seems like it would be impossible to meet that.

    Again - this was a conversation in passing, so I don't know all the details. 

    I thought they had resident OB's at the hospital 24-7, and on the birthing floor.  Perhaps they're not cleared for surgery, though?  Not sure.  The main OB practice for the hospital is actually connected to the hospital - down a floor or two and in another connected building - maybe a 2-3 minute fast walk away including elevator time?  Not sure how far away from the OR, which I guess is more what would be at issue if there was a rupture.  That, obviously, would only be helpful during patient hours.

    I think that's weird and a little concerning that only residents would be on the floor.  Maybe that's just because the resident who did my internal was muttering to himself, "posterior and back...where is it? where is it?" when he was trying to find my cervix.  And he almost forgot to wash his hands and wear gloves multiple times.

    ... fortunately, the resident I spoke to way back when seemed much less imbecilic.

    That would concern me.  I want an OB available in case a medical emergency occurs.  That's part of the reason I want to make sure I deliver at a hospital.
