Anyone use Mei Tai baby carriers?

My daughter is 9 weeks now and I'm trying to find the right carrier for her that isn't as bulky as my Chicco carrier (which I think will be great once she's bigger). I was looking at the Mei Tai's and was wondering if anyone on this board has or is using one for their baby. What are your opinions on it? And would you reccomend a particular brand?

TIA!

Re: Anyone use Mei Tai baby carriers?

  • I have one. I have the Cat Bird Baby. I can't use it yet because she doesn't fit into it. I can't tighten it anymore because I can't breathe, and I feel like she is going to fall out if I don't, so we can't use it yet.

  • Love mine! meitaibaby.com, great customer service. My sis took mine to use at the airport, and decided to keep it, and I bought another one...I liked it that much more than my moby and peanut shell.
  • Oh, I looked at a babyhawk, but got the meitai as baby can sit facing forward, and my DS likes to see the world ?=)
  • I have a babyhawk and love it so far. The one drawback is not being able to face the baby forward, although I have heard that there are "tricks" to do that allow you to do that. My DD is small (10th%) and I've used it since about 2 weeks old.
  • i LOVE my baby hawk! I would rate it in the top 5 baby products i've used so far!! :)
  • Love my Babyhawk. Its pretty, very comfortable, and ds falls asleep in it. I would also look into a Beco, my friend has one and i love it.

  • I've tried both a Kozy and a Sachi.  Right now, I like the Sachi better for the size that Elizabeth currently is.  I know that some babywearers like mei tais from day one; I liked my ring sling better when E. was a newborn.

You can use a mei tai with a tiny baby.  If it makes you feel better, you can put a rolled-up baby blanket around her so that she's more enclosed on the sides.  Put her in a carry facing you with her legs "froggied" up, cross the straps on your back, pass them around the front of the mei tai, and knot them securely.  It helps if you kind of bounce a little bit when you're getting it tied so that she's settled before you start walking/moving instead of shifting when you're on the go.
