DD will only nap while being held!!!!

I'm getting so frustrated. DD will be completely exhausted or even fall asleep in my arms and the second I set her down in her crib she starts screaming hysterically. I've tried just leaving her in there for a few minutes, thinking she might just settle down and go to sleep. But she just gets more and more upset. I rocked her to sleep this afternoon and tranferred her to her crib successfully. She slept for 10 minutes and woke up screaming. I went in and tried soothing her but that didn't work at all. So I picked her up and brought her out in the living room with me because DS was sleeping and I didn't want to wake him. She fell right asleep in my lap and slept for over an hour!! Anyone else have an LO that will only sleep while being held? DS was never like this and I don't know what to do! It's getting really frustrating because I can't get anything done and when she doesn't nap she ends up being way over tired and can't seem to catch up on her sleep!!

ETA: She sleeps great in her crib at night, usually 8-10 hours every night!

  • Yes, this is my LO too! He sleeps great at night in the pnp, but during the day he will only sleep in my arms. In fact he is sleeping right now! I just accept it as my lazy, tv/computer time!

  • Yep, we have witching hour everyday where all he wants it to be held. I work from home and it makes things impossible. Takes me twice the amount of time to get things done. He sleeps fine at night, too. Its so frustrating.

  • I could have written this exact post word for word! I find that it helps if I go out and run errands. He sometimes falls asleep in the car and if he doesn't he is pretty distracted when were out and not fussy! It also makes me feel better because I am not stressing about him not napping! Good Luck!?
  • Us too, including the will sleep great in it at night!

I guess we take two different approaches depending on the day. If he's tired and cranky and just needs sleep we hold him...getting sleep trumps the location! But, our Pediatrician told us to keep trying, so every day for at least one nap we lay him down in the crib and just try to keep him in there as long as possible. This seems to be a common issue with babies, so I"m not going to worry about it too much. Our Pedi also told us this is common with good night sleepers.

  • Same boat here. I found she will sleep well in our bed by herself or in her boppy by herself, both with a blanket over her lower half. I watch her constantly, but it's the only rest I get for my arms during the day.

I think swaddling would work, but I like to reserve that for night so I haven't gone there during the day.

  • Here!  I love it, though.  I catch up on my DVR'd shows and emails and she'll snooze up to 3 hours as long as I'm there.  They grow out of it, if it makes you feel any better :)  She'll sometimes take a morning nap in her crib now - last week I think she did 4 days or something like that?  But honestly I kind of missed her - lame, I know.

  • DS was like that, but w/ going to bed at night.  His naps have never been an issue b/c he naps in the swing.  :)  However, at night it was terrible.  I finally stuck to a routine at night and he fell into it.  It also helped that he finally took a pacifier instead of always having to be on the nip.  I say try to get into a routine for the nap and keep trying.  HTH!!
