spitting up the reflux med...

DD is on Prevacid now and I am supposed to give it her a half hour before she eats. I usually just give it to her when she's hungry (I feed on demand) then waste some time by changing her, talking to her, etc. Well she has been spitting it up lately, so I was wondering if I should give her more? I think I'm going to call her dr. about it tomorrow, but I was just wondering if you ladies had any experience with this issue.

Re: spitting up the reflux med...

  • I had the same experience and DD is also on demand. Unfortunately, you have to time this one. Prevacid should be given on an empty stomach. I decided to give the med in the morning. Here is what I do:

After DD has her first feed I wait 1 1/2 hours, then give the medicine. I give a little extra because some of it always winds up on her chin.

    • I hold her upright for 15 minutes, then put her in her swing for 10 minutes so I can do other stuff.
    • Then I change her diaper (she frequently poops after she gets Prevacid) and talk to her for the last 5 minutes.
    • Then I feed her, even if she is not showing signs of hunger (which is rare, I think she can always eat).
    • I do this even if she is asleep as she sometimes is. I've woken her to give her the medicine and to eat later.

Sometimes, like today, she winds up throwing it up again later. The pedi told me that as long as it's been at least 15 minutes after the dose is given, it's ok. If she throws up medicine within 15 minutes, I can give another dose. That has only happened twice in the 3 months we've been on the medicine.

Also, the longer she's been on it, the less she spits up and the less Prevacid comes back up. And also be aware that eventually she may outgrow her dose. We just upped the dose for DD because she showed signs again (back arching and crying during and after eating).

Good luck. I hate acid reflux.

  • I'd double check on the "giving Prevacid on an empty stomach".  I was told that by the Bump ladies but when I asked my pedi/gi docs, they all said give it with feedings.  But to answer your question... definitely ask but whenever my son spit it up, I didn't give more.

  • If Andrew immediately spit all of his up, and it was super obvious, we gave him more. If we weren't sure, we didn't.
  • Our pedi told us that if we knew for sure she spit it up within 15 min, to go ahead and give her more.
