I'd like to get a sling to carry DS around the house while I do chores and such, however I've heard about safety concerns regarding suffocation and accidental falls - can anyone tell me which slings are supposedly the safest for newborns? TIA!

You basically just want to use common sense & steer clear of bag type slings. Pouch & ring slings are perfectly safe. We really like our Hotsling, as far as slings go. They've stopped production temporarily but you can still find them in stores, on Ebay, etc.
Here's a good link (with other links) on sling safety:
We have a munchkin jelly bean sling and I love it. I agree with pp, just use common sense, don't let any fabric cover the baby's face, make sure the fabric is breathable, etc.
