Minnesota Babies

Driving road test?

Yes, I admit. I am 22 years old, just had a baby and I don't have my drivers license. I am starting to go crazy having to be in the house all the time. I used to just take the city bus everywhere (and was fine with that) but there's no way I'm bring my baby on the bus.

So, where is a good place to take the drivers road test? I'm in St. Paul and fine with going to whatever suburb. I just don't know where any of the road tests take place!

Also, what can I expect? I'm most nervous about what kind of parking tests there are... I know there's 90 degree backing and parallel, is that it?

Any other advice? I'm a horrible test taker and have been putting it off taking it for almost a year. But I know for my sanity, I need to get it soon.

TIA ladies!

Re: Driving road test?

  • do you need to get a permit first? and/or take the written test, too?

i know when i originally moved to minnesota, i had to take the written test to get my license, even though i had a valid license from IL. i failed it the first time because i missed one question more than what's allowed.

so i studied and passed it the second time.

i believe you can pick up a guide from the testing center, it's well worth it to study up for the written test so you don't have to go back and take it again.

sorry i couldn't be more help for the driver's test.

    good luck!

  • I would suggest taking the test in a small suburb. I live in Chaska, and my neighbor girl just took the test here. Apparently you just go around town. You will have to parallel park and park backing up. Have you taken the written test? If not you will need to take the written test in order to take the drivers test.

  • There is a center in Eagan off Cliff Road.  I *think* you can take both the test and behind the wheel at that facility.

You will need to parallel park without hitting any of the flags and be close enough to the curb.

  • I took mine in Shoreview.  I liked it because it is a closed course.  Some of the courses are on city streets.

Pay attention to signs!  I failed my first test because I turned from a one way on to a 2 way from the wrong lane.

Make an appointment.  If you don't you will need to get there extremely early in the morning and it is a long wait.

  • It's been a while, but I took my test in Plymouth. It was a closed course. Not sure if it's still there. For some reason it was 'better' to take it at a closed course when I was in HS, although w/an open/regular city course you could go drive it & practice beforehand. Parallel parking, 90 degree backing...one way roads, nothing too crazy. Here's a site w/a practice written test. https://www.testquestionsandanswers.com/drivers-license/minnesota.html

& here is a link to the handbook online for mn:

    https://www.testquestionsandanswers.com/dmv/minnesota.html

& if you click on the link below it gets you to "MN's official DMV site", click on 'locations' & put in 'road test' from the drop down - it'll give you all of the location choices.

  • Thanks ladies! I do have my permit, it expires in April though. I'm going to go out and practice all the scary parking today, haha. And hopefully make an appointment for the actual test this week depending on how it goes!

I really appreciate all the info! :)
