What do you sweeten your LO's food with?

Is artificial sweetener bad for our LOs?  I always have a shake for breakfast just non fat milk, fresh fruit, and a pack of equal.  On our way out the door Josh always takes a two or three drink of my shake ... and I got to thinking is can the sweetener be bad for him?

I sweeten his oatmeal or cream of wheat with honey usually, but I'd rather use sweetener if I'm going to have some too.  What do you guys use?

Re: What do you sweeten your LO's food with?

  • Usually fruit.  Sometimes honey.  DS has oatmeal every morning and I just mix in whatever fruit (or frozen fruit) I have on hand.  Strawberries and mangos are his favorite.

Can you just seperate his portion out and then add different sweeteners if you don't want honey?

  • Nothing except fruit.  I don't really want to encourage her to have a sweet tooth.  I'd never use sugar or sweetener in her food if I didn't have to.
  • I don't use artificial sweetener for myself so I definately wouldn't for Princess B.  I never thought about it but I don't ever sweeten her food with anything!  I use fruit in her cereal but that's about it.

If I was going to use anything I'd just use plain old sugar.

  • No sweetener, sugar, or honey.  Only fruit puree.
  • Why do you have to sweeten it with anything?? How about just leaving it natural??  Why would you even want to start that habit if he'd eat it without it.  It's not like artificial (hence the name) is healthy.

No, artificial sweeteners are not good for anyone, let alone infants/toddlers.

  • They just eat it plain or with cut up fruit.
  • I don't sweeten DD's food at all.  She doesn't know the difference, so I figure why bother giving her artificial stuff.

For me, I use stevia or real sugar if there isn't another choice.

    Exactly!

  • I  mix a fruit puree into their cereal.

  • We don't sweeten his food, and yes: artificial sweeteners are bad for adults and children.  I also personally think they taste like pesticide mixed with sugar, so I can't stand them.
  • I don't often need to sweeten his food, but I have used brown sugar before.
  • We do not sweeten DS's food with anything added. He has oatmeal every morning and eats it as is. We give him fruit, but do not add sugar etc...

If it has sugar etc...in the food already thats one thing, but no, we do not add to it.

  • Nothing. He likes bitter and sour foods. Even if he preferred a sweeter taste, I would only use fruit. He doesn't need sugar or artificial sweetener added to his food.

Like this. I'd rather have a small amount of real sugar than an amount of artificial.

  • Uh, yeah. I won't be giving my kid artificial sweeteners on purpose.

If you sweeten it, that is how they will come to expect it. If it is something like oatmeal, I generally just add fruit to it, which is sweet enough.

For pancakes, she gets a little bit of pure maple syrup but isn't very interested.

I bake with raw honey generally, or sugar in the raw.

  • The only thing I've ever sweetened for DD (and its for my older DD, not DD2) was a smoothie because she thinks greek yogurt is too tart. I just add more fruit and a little honey.

I don't even use artificial sweeteners so I wouldn't give them to my kids.

  • I have done research on artificial sweetners..Equal is one of the worst because it is 90% chemical.  That being said, there are other artificial sweetners that are better.  But for as much as he is having I am sure he will turn out just fine :)

  • I never use artificial sweetener. I don't like the taste really. Plus its not really good for you. I rather use real sugar then that stuff. I never sweeten DS' food anyways. I just use the fruit to make it sweet. He likes it just fine.

  • The only sweeteners I use are honey and fruit.
  • Not a thing.  No added sugar, no added salt.  Just the food.

  • Ive used a tiny bit of honey in his oatmeal before but usually I just give fruit flavored yogurt as a top on top of pancakes or french toast ect.

this for us too.  I've never sweetened anything I've fed DD.  She eats pancakes and waffles plain as I don't see the point of giving her syrup on them if she'll eat them plain, etc.

  • He gets some things, like animal crackers and yogurt, that have some added sugar (no artificial sweeteners).  If he's eating oatmeal, he gets it with some applesauce or raisins mixed in.  The other night I made spaghetti squash for dinner that was sauteed with some maple syrup.  Generally we try to avoid a lot of added salt and sugar at our house (for all of us, not just DS).
  • I think giving him a sip or two of your drink is fine.

I make a yogurt/oatmeal mix for breakfast and I mix the oatmeal, plain yogurt, dried fruit (usually raisins and craisins) on Sunday and then as I dish it out, I mix it with Splenda in my bowl and honey in E's bowl.

  • I don't even use that stuff myself.  I;m sure not going to feed it to my child.

It also sets their taste buds to need a much higher level of sweetness to be satisfied.

To answer your question, honey in our smoothies.  I don't sweeten other things, like oatmeal and he eats it.

  • I don't sweeten DS's food.  The pediasure the pedi wants him to drink already has a disgusting amount of sugar in it

  • Fruit in his oatmeal, fruit on his pancakes/waffles.  I actually tried molasses in his oatmeal once and pure maple syrup on his waffles, but he turned his nose up both times.  I'll just stick with the fruit:)

I actually just gave up all artificial sweeteners, because they were giving me breathing issues. The day after I stopped drinking diet coke, my symptoms went away.
