Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What is your 7 monthers nap schedule?

So I think DS may be the worst sleeper in America!! :o) He will only nap for about 30 minutes at a time, and we are lucky to get 3 naps in him all day. (So about 1.5 hours in the whole day) How much does your 7 month old sleep? Am I expecting too much of him to sleep more? Sometimes he does great at night and will go 7:30-7:30, so on those days I dont expect too much in the way of naps. But some nights he will wake up screaming in the middle of the night and it will take 2 hours to get him back down...and he still wont nap those days! So I guess my question is, how much does your DC nap? Where do they nap? And do you have any suggestions that may help me get DS to nap better? (We just moved him from napping in the swing to napping in the crib, but sometimes he will refuse to sleep in the crib and just scream his little head off).

Re: What is your 7 monthers nap schedule?

  • Justin takes 4 naps a day ranging from 30 min to over and hour.  If its an hour nap or longer than he will nap 3 times a day.  Hes sleeps and naps in his crib he has since he was 3 months old.

He goes to sleep by 7pm and wakes between 6-7am in the morning.  He wakes 1-2 times a night for a bottle and he goes immediately back to sleep.

As for suggestions. Does he have a stuffed animal to sleep with?  A soother for his nap time?  A bed time routine?  So he associates all that with night time?

  • DD was napping twice a day at 7 months, sometimes the odd catnap around 4 or 5 as well. But mostly 2 naps. We found she was having better naps at the same time of the day, so about 10:30 am, and 2:30 pm, or as soon as she is showing signs of being tired. She naps in her crib, and only has short naps of about 30-45 Min. She sleeps 12 hours at night though, so I can't complain. She usually sleeps really well when we are out and about in the afternoon. I guess if your DS has had a bad night, he'll have bad naps too, and vice versa. Have you tried laying him down in the PNP or just on you...to get in a good nap. For a while we were letting DD just nap on us, until she started having a longer nap (and when I say longer, I mean 45 min is heaven to us!) and then we got over the battle of trying to get her back in her crib, it's worked pretty well. GL!

  • Also, we introduced a blanket and a soother at about 7 months again. She always had a soother until 6 months and then stopped, and then we gave it back to her...i'll be kicking myself when we can't wean her from it when she is 5 years old...lol!! But it's really helped us out right now with naps and bedtime!

  • DS just dropped down to two naps recently.  He is now taking one in the mid-morning from around 11:00am-1pm and one in the afternoon from 3:30-5pm.  Sometimes the naps are shorter and sometimes they are longer, but they are pretty consistant timing-wise.  He always sleeps in his crib.

Something that helps me when DS is fighting sleep is to sit on the edge of the couch and hold him in my lap with my arms wrapped around him (as if he was in his car seat).  Then I will bounce him or sway my leg from side to side.  He usually fusses and squirms for a minute or two, but then he's out like a light.

  • Some kids are just not good nappers.  With my older DD, I was thrilled to get 2, 1 hour naps out of her in a day but she was always an excellent night time sleeper.

My now 7 month old - on the weekends, will take 2 naps a day that range from 1 hour to 2 1/2 hours each.  She mainly naps in her crib but if we are out and about, she will nap in the car or on me but she naps way better at home in her crib.  She sleeps 11-13 hours at night.  She is in daycare FT and her naps do vary while there due to the noise and just a different routine but she takes 2-3 naps of an hour or 2 each when there.

I have learned with both my girls that putting them into their crib awake but tired is the key.  They both are thumb suckers and that is a clue that they are tired (OK, just the baby now but my older DD was the same way at the time).  She talked in her crib for 30 mins Sunday before falling asleep.  We never went in as she was happy as could be and she slept for 1 1/2 hours once she fell asleep.
