If you live in a snowy area, which stroller are you getting?

Hi all,

I've tried to search the boards here but does anyone else find the search function useless?  Every time I type in any words it tells me there were no posts found.

Anyway, I live in Canada and am trying to decide which stroller to get since we get snow at almost any point in the year, and they only plow the main roads where I live.  Meaning roads around our neighborhood feel like a landmines have gone off after the snow has gotten packed down!  We also live near mountains and have lots of hills in the parks.

I thought the 3-wheeled types seemed like the best bet, but I also really like the BJ City Select for the way it can convert to a double - and we plan on hopefully having another within 2 years of the first.

So, just wondering suburban, cold-climate moms and moms-to-be out there are doing?  Thanks!

  • I'm in Michigan and I'm planning on getting the City Mini - seems like it would be able to handle light amounts of snow fine.  But anything deeper and I'm pretty sure I won't want to take the baby out in the stroller anyway.

  • I have a peg perego si and although we will have our first winter this year, I test drove it last february outdoors and it was fine for short trips.  I think realistically all you are going to do is stroll from the front door to the parking lot to the front door and here in minnesota they salt the walkways so I don't need a heavy terrain stroller for this.

  • I have the Orbit Baby, but I don't think I will stroll her out in the snow anyway.
  • I think any all terrain stroller with locking wheels would be good for snow. We went with the Bob revolution for this reason but if you want the option of adding a second seat maybe check out the Phil and Ted's
  • I agree with your line of thinking that the jogging strollers would be best for the snow. I love how big the tires are and the tire threads. However, in trying the popular jogging strollers such as the BOB I found that it was wide-enough and heavy-enough that I couldn't put it in the trunk unless I propped the wheel against my hip and then brought it to the car. That wouldn't work for me because I don't want to get my clothes completely disgusting if I'm using the stroller outside of the neighborhood.

I went with the Uppababy Vista. The tires are nothing like a jogging stroller but they're bigger and sturdier than most strollers. Looking the tires would also help getting it through the snow.

  • I live in Saskatchewan and we are getting the City Select for sure.  Not sure how good of an all-terrrain stroller it would make though.  You could just use a carrier if you are going hiking on trails.
  • Look for a stroller with big wheels.  I was told that you want your wheels to be 2x the level of snow... so if you have 3 inches of snow, you'll need 6 inch wheels to comfortably go through it.  A friend recommended Phil & Ted's.

  • We got the Uppa Baby, many people have it here and are out and about with it in the snow and it was highly recommended from the sales associate at Buy Buy Baby

  • Thanks for everyone's input.  I had ruled out the Phil & Teds because I didn't like how there was only one option for the second seat....I liked how you could have the baby facing you and the toddler facing away from you on the BJ City Select...but maybe I'll check around and see if I can find any reviews comparing the two and whether the different options are actually important to other moms.  But I do like the big tires on the Phil & Teds...

  • We don't own a car and made it through our first winter with DD with our Kolcraft Options three wheel stroller.

We now have a Chariot Cougar (primarily used for biking, but we also use it for jogging and strolling), and it plows through snow with no effort. I absolutely adore it and wish that we had had it from the very beginning.

  • BJ City Mini. But I don't really intend to go out trekking through snow when it's effing freezing out with my baby. I just need it to handle the light snow/slush that's left in parking lots after a storm for when I run errands.

  • We go up to the snow but it does not snow where we live.  We have used our phil and teds sport and a dreamer desgin rebound lite (not a good everyday stroller because the front wheel does not turn) and both did great in the snow.  Dreamer design has other strollers like the rebound lite.
  • We re in MI, and went with the Uppababy. Like PPs, I don't plan on using it much when there is a bunch of snow outside... I hate cold weather!

  • Well, Bugaboo strollers actually sell snow tires.

But if you don't want to spend $1000+.... :)

Our BOB Revolution has been used in snow and deep sand and has done great in both.  It has a high clearance and big inflatable tires.  We had major snow last winter and I took my DD for a walk with about 10 inches of snow on the sidewalk.  No issues.  I just had to make sure to dry off the frame well to prevent rust.

I have a Baby Jogger City Select and I don't think I would attempt snow.  It just doesn't look like it would do as well as the BOB (smaller tires, lower clearance).  But I have never tried...

If you go with a Revolution they have a great re-sale.  So essentially you could have it for however long and then either sell it and buy a double or sell it and buy the BJCS.  Also, to me the Revolution is a jogging/heavy duty stroller and the BJCS (despite the "jogger" name) is just an everyday stroller that conveniently converts between single and double mode.  So it makes sense in my eyes to have both Angel.

No offense intended at all.  But by the time you are lugging around your 20+ pound baby everywhere you will be strong enough to thow a BOB in and out of your car without even thinking about it.  I am 9 months pregnant (and am not a big person - I am 5'3") and can do it easily thanks to my toddler and how much I carry her around.  You truly do get "mom guns" Smile
