1st Trimester

Morning sickness and work...

My hubby and I are not telling anyone about baby #2 for another month or so. I am worried though that my co-workers will catch on if I go running to the bathroom...How have you handled m/s at work?

Re: Morning sickness and work...

  • I found a medicine that helps control the actual vomiting and then I've been really careful about eating small snacks throughout the day to keep the nausea to a minimum.  I have some flexibility with my job, too, so I've been able to work from home the two days that I just could not control the vomiting.  Good luck!

  • I'm not telling work for another two months.  I'm just pushing through it.  Sucking on hard candy, drinking giner ale, etc.  Mentally, I just don't think about feeling bad and go on about my job. Best of luck and hope you feel better soon.

  • I was terribly sick from 5 to 7 weeks. I had to call out a couple of time, so ultimately I had to tell work. I started taking Zofran and it's helped tremendously. I'm not 100% better, but I can actually function like a human being.

  • I have the constant nausea, without the vomitting, but I've found that forcing myself to eat something all morning seems to help. I usually snack on cold grapes or some kind of small crackers. I think my coworkers think I'm pretty ill now though. I've had comments about looking pale and under the weather....like I really needed to hear that!

  • I wanted to add that I also found that chewing certain types of gum helps me, too.

  • I always wondered what people did about this before I was pregnant... and now that I'm nauseous most of the day I wish I didn't know!  So far, anytime I've needed to actually throw up, I breathe with my mouth open and think about anything else for as long as it takes me to (semi-calmly) walk to the bathroom (out the door, down the hall) where I do ultimatly end of throwing up.  It's an awful feeling.  I've found that hard candies only work for as long as I'm sucking on them (and yesterday my boss made a comment about the large amount of lollipops I was eating at 9am!).  Carbonated drinks help (water makes me MORE nauseous) and I ended up telling my boss just because I've been coming in later and later to work (while I spend 30 minutes after waking in the bathroom at home) and she's very sympathetic, so that helps.

I agree with someone else that the ONLY thing that seems to help a little if forcing myself to eat (hard to do when you feel nauseous) but that usually keeps the nausea at bay...

    Good luck!

  • My husband found Preggie Pops for me and they saved my life.  They are suckers that have flavors like ginger, lavender, and mint.  They are sold at Babies R Us, Motherhood, and online.  I also drank room temp, flat ginger ale.  I also ate pieces of candied ginger and ginger ale.  My mom found several types of gummy ginger candy that worked well, and my brother gave me Sea Bands.  They go around your wrists to prevent nausea - they worked great as well.  You can find those at most frug stores.  I always at tiny nibbles and drank milk.  I would wake up at all hours of the night to throw up.  I found if I didn't let my stomach get completely empty that worked better for me too.  Then before it was time for me to get out of bed in the morning I would put on my wrist bands and get a Preggie Pop.  During the most intense weeks of morning sickness, my husband really came through for me.  He would pack my lunch the night before with an assortment of things for me.  I didn't have to look at it or smell it.  He would also wake up and make something for me to eat like a smoothie, cheese toast and milk, peanut butter and banana sandwich - easy things to eat that didn't have to be eaten right away.  Then I would find a sweet note from him in my lunch telling me how beautiful I am and how my he loves me and our little one (that always made me feel better).  Luckily the morning sickness will go away and will be a distant memory.  The second trimester is wonderful bliss!  Good luck to you!

  • what medicine was it that you took?
  • I've been focusing on the Preggie Pops hard candies. There have been enough pregnancies in my office that regular snacking makes people just as suspicious as running to the bathroom.
