My local library must not support AP

They don't have one single AP book beyond the Dr. Sears Baby Book.

Re: My local library must not support AP

  • they probably just don't support people  in general that need a book to figure out how to raise a child.

  • That's no fun!  Have you tried finding an AP group in your area?  Most have great libraries of their own. :)

  • I'm sure that's it. Confused

  • Is it the whole system or just your branch? A lot of systems have to share books in order to meet their budgetary requirements - but you should be able to still get the books you need - or ask one of the librarians to do an inter-library loan - which borrows from other systems.

You have never looked up anything in a book or on the Internet or elsewhere in regards to parenting decisions?
  • Is this a joke or TIC?  If not, I can promise you "supporting AP" is at the bottom of their list of concerns.  Keeping the doors open and the paychecks going is #1.

If there are holes in their collection, please make suggestions for them.  I assure you they want to know.  Most librarians buy based upon reviews.  Specialty books/info. isn't always reviewed in the major trade publications.  And even then they don't always get good reviews.

Ditto this. In our library system, each branch has a focus. My local branch's focus is books, DVDs and CDs in foreign languages to serve our entire borough's multicultural population. So I can get amazing, hard-to-find novels in Spanish, but barely a thing relating to cooking, parenting or politics. However, they make it really easy on line for me to request books from other branches and have them delivered to my library so I can pick them up. I got a lot of good books on nursing and weaning this way (something I found very helpful to read about, despite the pp's snarkiness about needing books to learn how to parent.)

The whole process usually takes less than a week. Good luck!

Wow, this is snarkier than I usually see on this board. While I agree that with all the budget cuts I've seen in our local library system, keeping the doors open and paychecks going is the priority, our system really values making information available that caters to the needs of our local population. If there's a hole in the OP's system's collection regarding AP, it may be because their collection librarians haven't seen a huge demand for it from the community. Maybe they are serving a majority older, retired population whose child-rearing years are way behind them (just guessing since OP is in AZ), who knows.

  • Yes, I was mostly joking. I don't really think the librarians are a bunch of AP- bashers. Thanks for the suggestions ladies.

That was not snark.  That was my very serious reply in case the OP was serious.  I'm glad she wasn't.  :-)
