Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Not sure what to think... Your opinions please.

1.  When my grandma and dad watch DS they say one 5 oz. isn't always enough and they give him 2-3 more oz.  They think he needs more, because he cries and therefore they think he's not satisfied.  However, even after he eats like 7 oz. he still cries.  I think it's that they overfeed him and he has an upset stomach, gas, reflux, etc.  He does spit up too.

2.  I used to burp DS between breasts when I bf, but the past couple weeks I don't because he gets really upset when I take him off the first side.  I wait to do this until it seems like he's not getting anymore (his suck changes and he lets go frequently when he's not getting any more milk).  Then, I switch sides.  Once he shows sides that he's not getting any more from the second side, I sit him up to burp him and he gets really upset.  He arches his back and cries, even after he burps and spits up a little bit.  Here's the thing...I figured out that if I give him his nuk right after he eats, then he's happy and doesn't cry (whether he burps or not).

Does this mean he's not getting enough milk from me?  He appears to be growing fine and eats every 3-4hrs during the day.  I don't think he's having a growth spurt, because when he had those before, he wanted to nurse every 1 1/2-2hrs.  It's different than that.  Just that he seems to want more...

  • I don't know what to tell you regarding the burping issue but I can tell you that I have to give DD her paci right after eating too, and it doesn't really matter how much she eats, shesimply just wants to suck more.

  • My 4 month old has cried when being burped since a few weeks old. Was misdiagnosed as severe reflux when really it was just

    a) her being pissed

    b) her being gassy & not liking to be burped

    c) very mild reflux (that doesn't require medication)

I put a pacifier in her mouth while I'm burping her and when she burps, out it flies. This helps with the crying.

I would feed him as much as he wants/eats excitedly without spitting up. While babies with reflux *do* comfort eat, 2 or 3 ounces would be quite a big leap for simple comfort eating. Does your LO have other signs of reflux?

  • Similar to PP - DS would eat for hours if I let him - I literally have to time him to 6.5 minutes a side when I nurse, if I go over he spits up EVERYWHERE...I have to put a paci in, allow him to find his thumb or distract him...my parents have learned - but, it helped that our Pedi is a close family friend and told them not to feed him more than 5 oz at a time (and the Pedi recommends 3-4 oz only)
  • As far as reflux symptoms go, he just spits up often, but he strains a lot/farts a lot, so I think it's just because of that.  I'm not sure what other symptoms are.  The crying I guess, but he's spit up since he was born and didn't always cry after eating like he has been lately.

It's good to know that others have to give their LOs a paci after eating.  I kind of wondered if he just wanted to suck more.  I will tell my grandma and dad not to overfeed him and to stick to 4-5 oz. per time even if he cries after it's gone.

    Thank you very much!

  • LO went through something similar the week I went back to work. So we up-ed her to 5 oz a feeding (from 4.) Problem was, at night she would cry and cry and scream and be super gassy, so we changed her two bottles of the day, 9am and 1pm, to 5 oz. By then I'm home from work and she will nurse, or if we give her another bottle we offer 4 oz, or 3.5 and if she doesn't finish, oh well.First feeding of the day is typically nursing and she'll only take one side and I can pump 3-4 oz, so I'm assuming she isn't getting much more than that. We haven't had the gassy screaming nights since this change and she doesn't seem hungrier than 4 oz in the evenings anyway.
