Crib questions

(1) If you got a convertible crib, did you actually convert it to a toddler bed? What about the full bed? I'm going back and forth between getting a Graco Lauren (the stationary one), or spending more for a nicer, Munire convertible crib. On one hand, I kind of think I should just get the cheaper one, and then move her straight into a twin bed instead of messing with all the convertible crap. But on the other hand, the Munire cribs are really pretty, and sturdy, and well made, and did I mention pretty? :)

(2) Did anyone get white furniture? Are you happy with your choice, or did you regret it?

(3) Anything else I should consider when looking at cribs?

THANKS!!! :)

Re: Crib questions

  • We got Sarah (DD#1) a convertible Pali crib from Baby's 1st.  I was very happy with that crib and she did sleep in the converted version of it for over a year when she was a toddler.  I liked it because when converted, it was very low to the ground.  She fell out a few times but quickly learned to stay in.  We eventually bought her a big girl twin bed from Pottery Barn.

Elizabeth (DD#2) has a white crib. It's an old hand-me-down Jenny Lind style crib and I LOVE it.  I also bought a white changing table from Land of Nod to coordinate with it.  The colors are slightly different.  If you go with white, be sure to compare shades.  I preferred the true white Land of Nod furniture to the antique white corner bookshelf I bought from Pottery Barn, for example.

  • 1 - We did convertible sets for both kids and ordered the rails too.  I think whichever route you go is fine though.  Just if you do end up planning to convert it at some point, make sure you put rail covers on the rails when she starts pulling up so she doesn't chew on the rails and ruin the crib when she's teething.

I know the Graco Lauren crib is really popular, and I'm sure a good option, and I know Munire is a great brand, so I think you can't really go wrong either way.  Real helpful, huh?

  • We have the Munire (Essex?) - I really like it.  We are planning on converting to the toddler bed eventually (we did get the toddler rail).  We visited a friend recently who had a 2 y/o and she fell out of the bed twice the night we were there.  I know DS is all over the place when he sleeps, so I am glad we got the rail.

The full/double bed is not that much bigger than a twin bed, so I figured his room could handle the full/double in the end.  I like that we already have a footboard and headboard, and I like the style of the bed.  Ours is very neutral and won't look babyish later on.  We also got the dressers and bookcase, so I like that it's a matching set.  Theorectically, I hope he keeps the set "forever" and takes it with him to college, etc.  We knew our investment would be more right now since we wanted them to last that long.

We did have a crib rail cover that we put on pretty much from the beginning and we haven't had problems with chewing.

Ours is the chestnut color and I really like it.  It's darker than oak, but not as dark as say a cherry - so I can't help you on the white.

  • We got DD a convertible crib, but mostly because it was cheap and we liked the design. If this baby is a girl, she'll get DD's crib and DD will get a twin bed. If this baby is a boy, he'll get a new crib (DD's crib is very girly) and DD will either get a twin bed or we'll convert her crib to a full.

We got antique white furniture and I love it, but it totally screams girl, so I wouldn't use it for a boy. Plus DD's crib has scalloped edges, so definitely girly :)

  • We got a convertible crib and matching dresser for #1.  We passed that crib and dresser down to #2 and bought new furniture for #1.  We intend to convert to a full bed when the time comes.  I'm glad we don't have buy any more furniture for the kids.
  • We have a Munrie (Newport) in Espresso. I love it! We converted it (with the rail) at about 14 months. It's low enough to the ground that G can climb in and out on his own. We will eventually convert it into a full, since his room doubles as a guest room in a pinch.

I am extremely happy with the quality of his furniture and I'm glad we went with something that was a little larger investment at the beginning, but will hopefully last him until he goes to college (and beyond). I actually love his furniture so much that we'll likely get the same set for baby #2 (white for a girl, espresso again for another boy).

  • I'll be the voice of dissent.  We bought a Munire crib and dresser (Urban) for E and, although I love the style and look, I'm not happy with the quality...nor with how much money we spent on it.  Both pieces scratched pretty badly within a month of using them.  When it came time for her to move out of her crib, I couldn't stomach spending additional money to buy the conversion kit for the crib, so we just bought a toddler bed and cheap dresser from Ikea and the baby will use the Munire furniture for now.

  • We did a convertible for DS with matching dresser.  We converted it for the toddler bed and now a full size. It was nice to already have it when he started climbing out of the crib. However, I didn't like it as much when we were actually using it as a crib because given the design our crib bumper and bedskirt never went on correctly. The back wall of the crib was not slatted (sp?) and it made both pieces difficult to put on and they sat funny on that side. I assume not all convertibles are like this though.

  • We have the Graco Lauren in Espresso, but it is the convertible version.  I am very happy with it so far.  Granted, T has only been sleeping in his crib for about a month now.  It is very sturdy when put together properly.  I noticed the ones in the stores seemed less sturdy.  I am very happy with how little we spent on it and it came with a free mattress during a special at Target.

We might convert it to a toddler bed, but I'm not really sure yet.  I figure at that point we will be moving T into a bedroom upstairs and may want to get him a "big boy bed."  I never understood buying nursery sets and expecting the kid to use it until they go to college.  Most likely the furniture will be majorly out of style in 18 years and they don't sell night stands with the sets.  The Graco Lauren is very well priced, so you can still afford to get the child nicer furniture later when they aren't going to teeth on it!

  • We did not get a convertible. We knew we would be having a second baby with in a couple years and that we would hand the crib down. Plus, most of the convertibles are pretty traditional and we wanted something more modern.

Our crib is white with birch slats. I do not regret the white at all. In fact, I love it. The only issue is that ours is a high gloss enamel finish and nicks/scratches are way more obvious than they would be on a painted piece. Still, if we decide to have a 3rd and use it again, the scratches will just be there. They can be repaired but it's harder than painting or staining...

  • 1. We bought a convertible and converted it to a toddler bed...then had another baby and turned it back into a crib and got new stuff for Amelia. We'll convert it again and then make it a full when Juliet is big enough.

    2.  Both sets are white and I love it for a girl.

I just realized that I don't have pictures of J's room.

    3.  look at pictures of it converted as that's the way you'll see it for most of the time you own it.  If you don't love it that way then buy a cheaper crib that doesn't convert.

This isn't true. The Munrie set we bought had a nightstand and we bought a 2nd nightstand to use in the future.

  • For Sam, we got a convertible Pali crib with the intention of using it throughout his life.  Then when it was time to convert to a toddler bed, I was lazy and didn't order the side rail, so I just bought a cheap BRU toddler bed that we used up until maybe 9 months ago when we switched to a twin.  That expensive crib is now sitting in storage.  I tried to sell it, but no takers.  AND the worst part is, the "conversion" to a full bed is a crock.  The back piece of the crib becomes a headboard, but it doesn't attach to anything.  Sorry, but that's not converting anything.  It's taking the crib apart and propping the piece up against a wall.  Confused

For Hannah, we bought an inexpensive ($99) white Jenny Lind crib and it was just fine.  We also got her the same toddler bed we'd gotten for Sam, and now she's in a twin.

Looking back, I wish I would have either a) gone with a cheaper non-convertible crib, or b) did my homework more on exactly how the piece looks when it is converted to both the toddler and regular beds.  So if you decide to go with a convertible, do your homework!!

  • 1. We have a convertible crib for Mar and loved it so much we bought an identical one for Eliza.  However, Marion is 2 and we haven't switched it to the toddler bed yet.

JMO, but I wouldn't spend a ton of money on a crib because kids can destroy them a lot quicker than you think.  Ours looks like a very angry beaver attacked it.

    2.  We have white furniture and like it a lot.  It doesn't match (cribs are from Wal-Mart and furniture is from Ikea) but it's not super noticable.

    3.  If you get a convertible crib, find out if it comes with all the conversions or if you have to purchase them separately.

  • We got the Munire Essex convertible crib and converted it straight to a full size bed when Rena was 18 months. I really like the quality and it looks great as a bed! We plan to buy another convertible crib whenever we have #2!

  • We have a convertible but I don't think we will convert it.  I think her room will be too small for a full.  We got it from JCP.  It is one of the top ranked on consumer reports and I think we spent $220ish or so on it.

I can look up the name for you when I get home tonight.

  • We have a Munire convertible but I can't remember the name of the collection. We bought the toddler rails and conversion to a full size bed - whether we'll use the full or not I'm not sure but better safe than sorry I guess. I'm 99% sure we'll use it as a toddler bed though so I figure we're getting our money's worth for the next 3-4 years (or my parent's money's worth since they bought our nursery furniture for us). I know the Baby's 1st has a big sale for Black Friday which is when we bought ours (well we bought it two weeks before and they honored the sale price). I love our nursery furniture.

I kinda wish we went with white. Most the the cute pink stuff I found was always paired with white. My concern was it wouldn't last as long with a kiddo getting it dirty but I really love the look of white furniture for a girl.

Oh, well I guess some sets do.  The ones I looked at did not have matching nightstands.  Way to think ahead!
