Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sippy or no sippy?

I have read about sippy cups. I have heard several ppl say that they decided not to give their child a sippy cup and just teach them to drink from a regular cup on his/her own. My Pedi gave me information on how to teach a 6 month old to drink from a cup. It's interesting. It talks about how children are much smarter than we give them credit and that a 6 month old CAN and WILL learn how to drink from a cup .... and then eventually learn how to hold it too, without spilling or getting too much.

I have tried it 3x a day at each solid feeding for 4 days now, it's worked great. Obviously, I have to hold the cup for him--First time, he took too much and coughed.... and tried to put his hands all over it instead of letting me hold it...now he is learning to sip and pull away.. keep his hands still...then leans in to sip again. I was VERY impressed. Each time, he is better and better at it.

He is also good with a sippy cup and gets excited when he sees it.

I don't know what to do. I've heard it's hard to get the sippy away from them.. and I don't want my 3-4 yr old walking around with a sippy, but I also don't want juice stained on my carpet.

What are you ladies doing? Sippy cup or just teaching from a cup from the beginning?

Re: Sippy or no sippy?

  • DD could drink from my water glass before 6 mo if I held it for her and she showed interest in it.

That being said we just do a straw sippy (just the plain take and toss ones from target) it's a basic plastic cup, lid, straw deal.

She's great at it and it is good for their oral development and better for their top teeth (IMO I know some might disagree).

That way there isn't much spilling either ...but there will still be some....

  • I only give DS the sippy cup while in his high chair eating solid meals.  I have tried to let him drink from my water glass and it gets everywhere.
  • I asked our pediatrician about sippy cups and he said not to worry about them until she was a year old. But she sometimes holds her bottle herself, so I bought a couple (no PVCs, no phthalates, etc.) and will probably incorporate them into her solid food feedings in a few weeks. I think I'll keep them on her tray to start with, and continue to use bottles for her other feedings.

  • What do you all put in your cup/sippy cup?  Water? BM or Formula?  I would like to start working on using a cup with my son but I definitely don't want him having juice this young.
  • I'm planning to use formula, so that she recognizes the flavor. I don't want to introduce juice yet, either.

water and sometimes BM at this point.

    I don't think we'll do juice for a while

  • Good question.  I've been wondering about this!
  • He can drink water from a cup if I hold it for him (8 months old). He can sort of use a sippy. We put water in it so it's not messy, no juice for him, and he still gets his breastmilk from bottles and the breast. He just tends to make messes with cups and doesn't get that much from them so I figure water is fine. I just want him to become familiar so that it may be easier to get rid of the bottle in a few months or so.

  • Jack drinks great out of a cup and a sippy cup. Teaching him to drink out of a cup has made life hard because now he always wants to drink from our cups :p I will let him have a sippy with his meals because it's less messy.

  • Sippy cups are useful for certain situations, but DD drank from a regular cup most of the time starting at about 22 months.

We live in CO and it's very dry, so I let her have a sippy of water in her bed until very recently (she's 4.5).  Now I can trust her to have a cup of water by her bed.

DD was also very slow to take a sippy (14 months).  I had to cut down on nursing sessions to make her thirsty enough.

DS (6 months) can already drink from a sippy and it's useful in the evenings when I'm scrambling to get things done.  He drinks a couple ounces of breastmilk from his cup.
