Postpartum Depression

Zoloft-How did it make you feel the first week taking it?

I'm a SAHM with DS and was wondering if I can start this medication and still be okay home alone with him...meaning the side effects won't get in the way of my daily routine. Thanks.

Re: Zoloft-How did it make you feel the first week taking it?

  • To be honest, I almost called my husband to come home the first day I took it.  I got extremly agitated and jittery and started feeling some aggression which scared me.  That feeling lasted about 2 hours roughly 4 hours or so after I took the dose.  That was it though, later that day and the after that I was fine.  It might not effect you the same way, but if I were to do it again I would take my first dose on a weekend or when someone else is around to watch LO.

Thanks for sharing. I like the idea of starting on the weekend.

  • It didn't do anything to me at all.  I think it does different things to different people.  I also think it depends upon the dose you start on.  Your DR prescribed this medication for a reason.  You need to weigh the benefits and risks.  This medication can take up to 6 weeks to start working, waiting a week to start taking it isn't necessarily a good idea.  Just my opinion though - take it with a grain of salt.  Good luck on whatever you decide to do!

  • It made me dizzy for the first few days, so I switched to taking it right before bed time.  No more side effects!

  • I was really jittery and anxious. I called my OB's nurse line, and she said to cut the dose in half (50mg tablets) and once you feel ok on that, increase to the full 50. Too much too soon she said "can make you feel like you want to jump out of your skin". Once i was on the 25, i felt fine. (and could bump up to the full dosage within a few days)

My script is for 25mg for 7 days and to then go up to 50mg for 3 weeks and then go back in for a check up.

  • I started taking it at 14 weeks pregnant. It didn't do anything to me at all. Kind of like a sugar pill effect. Nada!

After while I just noticed I've stopped snapping at my two kids (6 and 8) and have been a ton more even keeled over the past few weeks since it's kicked in fully.

FWIW, I take it every AM. 50 mg and it's working great after being on it for a few weeks.

    Good luck!

  • Taking it at night helped me, but the first day I was pretty woozy, almost felt drunklike.  I was fine day 2 and on.
  • I started Zoloft during my 5th week of pregnancy due to severe panic/anxiety. I began with 25 mg for one week and then went up to 50 mg. I felt the sickest I've been in my life. I literally was so nauseaus, dizzy and anxious that I could not raise my head off the couch let alone leave the house. I completely lost my appetite and lost 7 pounds during those two weeks. I ended up with a 12 hour panic attack and went to the ER. They switched me to Celexa which helped me feel more normal by the next day. Now, I'm not saying this to scare you, because it is so different for everyone. My sister took Zoloft and said she had no side effects whatsoever and loved it. Each SSRI affects people differently. Be prepared for side effects (meaning warning your husband and/or helpers to be on standby in case you need them). I would say if you feel too terrible during your first week, don't wait and complain to the doctor. There are other drugs and it really is trial and error.
