NBR: How Many Of You Plan On Voting Today?

I'm getting ready to head out and vote. After talking with DH this morning, who thinks voting is a waste of time, I wondered how many other people plan on voting / think it's a waste of time.

Re: NBR: How Many Of You Plan On Voting Today?

  • I already voted this morning.  I think it is important.  I also beleive if you don't vote you don't have the right to b#tch about politics.

  • Well tell your husband he can't complain about anything government related (leaders, taxes, traffic lights!) if he doesn't vote! We are so lucky to live in a country where we have the freedom to choose our leaders. So many people just don't understand that right.

Yep, I voted. Packed up both kids with a diaper bag full of toys, pacis, bottles, sippy cup, snacks, and even the portable DVD player for DS1. This was because the line was over 2 hours 2 years ago. I knew it would not be as crowded this time, but I was prepared. Then the line was only 2 PEOPLE long! ha!

  • In general I don't think voting is a waste of time at all, however, our choices in NY are so horrible that I could possibly choose.  All the ads just make me want to vote even less.  I will not be taking part in election day today.

NY was seriously better off when Elliot Spitzer was in- and he was juggling a wife and an "escort" ;-)

    ETA: IMHO, of course!

  • I mailed my ballot in a couple weeks ago. If I couldn't do mail-in voting, I honestly don't know if I could afford the time to stand in line to vote. I always used to think voting was absolutely important, but I can see now why so many people don't take the time.

I feel the same way! I think people like to complain, but they are not willing to do anything to change it!

I tell him this all the time! You would think that because he is a police officer, that he would care who is in office, considering they pass the LAWS!
  • oh, i am so going to vote. yes, it's important and yes i'm all about "democracy" and blah blah blah-- but really, after spending the last few weeks BOMBARDED with political propoganda and annoying campaigns, i am going out there and voting the way *i* want to vote. it's kinda like giving a big "EFF YOU" to those people calling my house every fricking night trying to get me to vote for them.
  • I will be voting.

  • Yep. I took a walk with DS this morning and voted. I think it's important to participate in our democracy even if the choices aren't the greatest and full of corruption/deceit/lies.

  • I will be voting after work today.  DH didn't vote in the presidential election and I told that he couldn't comment or talk to me about the nominees or who won because he didn't vote.

Did you vote in the Primary Election?  Mudslinging isn't new.  You aren't proving any point or making anything any better by not voting.  I find it especially important now to vote and to show LO how important it is to take part in the political process.  :steps off soapbox:

Before you step off....This is an honest question- May I ask what you suggest when everything you have read in regards to the candidates in your state (and trust me, I'm not naive enough to listen to the commercials) lead you to believe they are either corrupt or, in my case, while they are a member of your political party, they do not represent your beliefs and plan to lead your state in a direction that will directly effect you in a negative way?  I'm not trying to make a point by not voting.  I honestly could not, in good conscious, choose one of the candidates I have to choose from.  We have a candidate in my area running who's slogan literally is, "Because I can't do any worse!"- this is what we're dealing with in NY.

  • I'm voting, although in my state it is a waste of time unless you are voting Dem.  I would love to vote for the third party candidate for governor, but I'm stuck voting for the lesser of two evils to get the one who I like least out of office.  I think it's sad that I'm voting for the guy who is only slightly better instead of the guy I like since he has no chance of winning.
  • www.votesmart.org is a good site to go to in order to see which candidate best relates with your beliefs.

Now, I vote pretty much democratic in a blazing red state, so I do feel sometimes that my vote doesn't count. But I still couldn't NOT vote. I feel like a lot of people like me feel like their vote doesn't matter because this area is so conservative, but if they all came out of hiding, who knows how things might change around here!

  • I will not be voting. Flame away if you want. And because of the fact that I don't vote, I don't b!tch about politics either.

I'm in NY too and I agree, the choices are terrible...for governor.  But there are other races going on plus a term limit vote.  I will be voting as soon as dd wakes up from her nap.

I will always vote - so many women fought hard for our right to vote.  I kind of feel like not voting is a slap in the face to all those that came before us.  You may not feel like you can make a change by voting but the fact that you CAN vote is amazing.  Think about other countries where women can't vote and what their lives are like.  I may not always like my choices but I am glad we have the right to vote.

It does sound like you have researched it and that is great.  At least you are making this choice as an informed voter (or non-voter).

Can I ask a question, and I don't mean it snarky.  Did you vote in the Primary Election that chose the candidates running in this election?  Sometimes those are just as important as the "big" election because it decides who are choices are?  If you did and you can honestly say there is no quality that makes either candidate stand out, do what you feel is necessary.

If someone doesn't vote in the Primary, they only have themself to blame for bad candidate.  (And I say this as a general statement, not towards the Doremi)

I was, unfortunately, out of town from the 13th-16th of September and our primary elections were the 14th, I believe.  Because it was a last minute thing, I missed the absentee ballot request date.  My DH did go vote and I tried to tell myself he was doing a "family vote" :-)  Our state's political situation is a mess.  If you ever watch Saturday Night Live, you'd see what a literal joke it is!! It makes for crazy debates in the faculty room at school (of which I stay out of!!)

  • I will not be voting today.  I refuse to support a candidate who can do nothing but bash the other candidates.. and thats all we seemed to have around here this time around.  If I feel that a candidate has gotten their point across nicely, and I agree with them, then I would vote.

And I do not complain about politics ever, I agree with the statement that if you don't vote your have no right to complain.

I'll also add that my dad is in politics and fully supports my stance.  He took the nice approach and got record breaking votes in his election last year without doing much campaigning.

Are there no issues on NY's ballot today?  90% of the candidates on my ballot were unopposed.  But the propositions are what got me to get up and go this morning.

  • I vote in every election and have since I was 18. Women fought for our right to vote and I don't want their fight to have been in vain. It is not a waste of time to me and even though I am very busy, I take the time to vote. It is very important to me.

Admittedly, it's probably a good thing I'm not voting because I haven't been following Missouri politics at all. IMO, it's better to not vote, than to vote uneducated.

Absolutely agree. I'm ultra conservative & in a red state, BUT, we are moving soon, to a blue state (although it may change after tonight, it's a close on for the first time in years, and I sure am hoping it does ;) But if it doesn't, that makes me want to vote MORE, if these people that don't think they could change  the state, would get out there & vote, it could definitely change it!! And I say this for both parties, it's sooo important to make your voice heard, even if I don't agree ;)

  • I voted on my lunch break. Voting is extremely important in our household--neither DH or I ever miss out on it! DH is in fact volunteering for the election today, too.
  • We are both voting tonight. We are conservative in a blue state (with no chance of ever being red!) but it still matters. I don't believe there are any props on the NY ballot; just candidates.

  • I voted this morning and took DD with me. I just feel that there are still so many people in this world dying for the right to choose their government so it's our obligation to participate in this honor! That and if someone doesn't vote- they don't get to complain about politics.Wink
  • I CAN"T vote, as I have dual citizenship.  When I tried to register they told me no as I haven't given up my Canadian citizenship. I thought that that was weird but what could I do?

Either way, I'm glad that today is voting day.  I'm so sick of seeing all the commercials that they sponser bashing the other people running.  They've been on TV for MONTHS.  That I won't miss.
