VBAC

WWYD - VBAMC or RCS Help!

Ok, I've had 2 C-Sections. DS #1 just didn't drop down at all after being induced and then started to have distress/heart rate drops during my contractions so they did emergency C-S. That sucked.

DS #2 - my hospital here does not do VBAC so it was a scheduled CS. Pretty amazing on how I felt for this one.

DS #3 on the way. I am not positive this is our last kid. They say C/S get harder and harder and some don't even recommend going past 3.

The hospital where I am currently going is within walking distance to my house - which is nice for taking care of dogs, getting to hospital in emergencies in the Wisconsin winter.

A hospital about 45 minutes away (in good weather) will at least consult me on a VBAMC...but I'd need to switch dr's and of course it's no guarantee that I'd be successful.  It'd be nice to avoid surgery if I can.

Blah.  Thoughts?

Re: WWYD - VBAMC or RCS Help!

  • Very personal, but I'd probably at least meet with the other doctor and find out more about the hospital's & doctor's VBAC rates before deciding.  If you're thinking of possibly having more kids, I'd probably try for the VBAC, personally.

    This.

ACOG supports VBA2C, if I'm not mistaken.  I'd go for it if you feel comfortable with the other doctor.

  • I third what everyone else said - you should at least explore your options, especially if you're not sure if you want to stop after three kids. good luck!
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Yeah, I guess one of my problems is I don't know any of the other doctors, and don't know anyone in that town to get recommendations. All I know is they do VBACs there. Hmm.

  • Have you asked on your local ICAN list for doctor recommendations?  They may have suggestions.  I actually got the suggestion for my FP/VBAC friendly doctor from our pedi, who is actually a part of the birthing coalition here (supports women in birthing and their choices within birthing).  Another place to ask is if there is a doula organization in your area, since they will have seen things from the inside - also any natural birth/birthing initiatives in your area.  Good luck!

  • Yay! I just scheduled a consult with a dr who does VBAC/VBAMC...

It's next week so we'll see what they think about my chart.

  • I think you made the right decision. It never hurts to talk. Honestly, doctors that don't support VBACs are uneducated and are not following the current ACOG guidelines.
The Knot won't share my Bump Siggy, so here's the low-down: 4/27/07 - Got engaged! 8/31/08 - Got married (to my best friend)! 12/30/08 - Got Pregnant! 9/3/09 - Welcome to the world, Elias Solomon! 8/16/10 - Got Pregnant, again! 5/14/11 - Welcome to the world, Talia Hadassah! 1/14/12 - Ready or not, here comes #3 (EDD 9/27/12)
  • My SIL is a obygn dr and she warned me that after a 3rd c/s statistics became hairer and hairer for the c/s. If you want more children, I'd definitely keep your options open.

Don't scare yourself online though. There are some scary m c/s stories.
