(usually a lurker...)
I am pumping 3x a day in my office and have a sign on the door that has a picture of a cow and says "Do Not Disturb"....however, I've had some people recently knock and try to walk in.
What's your strategy for keeping politely people out?
What do you say when they try and knock?
Re: ? for Pumpers with Office
My sign says "Amy is busy! Do not disturb". Thus far, no one has tried to enter. I am fairly certain that everyone in my office knows what I'm doing when my door is shut.
Where do you put your sign? Perhaps people don't see it as they try to come in.
I put mine right above the door knob so it will get their attention. I also put on the sign that I'll be available in 20 minutes.
Good Luck. I hope you have a lock on the door!
Wow - nice lack of respect for your privacy!
One thing you might try is putting up a sign saying exactly WHEN you'll be available again (assuming you know how long it takes you to pump) - say "DO NOT DISTURB - available at 3:35" or something that lets people know when you'll reopen your door. If you say "available in 20 minutes" people don't know when the 20 minutes started, know what I mean? I did this at the beginning but then didn't bother because it was never an issue. You could also say "DO NOT DISTURB - please call me at extensionXXX if your matter is urgent" if you're willing to take calls while pumping.
I'm not sure how long you've been back - I'm guessing not long if you're still pumping 3 times a day (I think I managed that for two weeks, tops). With time I'm guessing people will get the hint.
Yeah, not long. 3x is hard...how did you manage going down to 2x?
The people in my immediate office know what's up. Just the people who pop by. I did move the sign to a more obvious spot...hopefully that will help. And I'll just call out to people when I'll be out.
My sign is a bright neon pink, and begins with Do Not Disturb in about 90 font. It then states 'nursing in progress' and directs them to an office that can help them. I also have pumping times on my calendar, and my boss advertised this to our office staff. So far, no interruptions
I'm assuming your door doesnt have a lock? Any chance on getting a lock installed?
I pump in a supply room, before I came back my boss had a lock put on the door and informed everyone in the office that "when that door is closed, NHMama is doing mommy things and is not to be disturbed"... I was slightly annoyed at first that my office of all men was called together for a special meeting to be told about my "mommy things", but it did the trick, noone has even jiggled the handle when I'm in there!
On a side note- it also started an interesting topic of conversation with some of the guys in my office who are 20-somethings who don't usually see boobs as being for milk! I actually have had a few of them genuinely interested in why I BF, how long you "should" do it for, etc. Kind of surprising that they were curious and capable of a mature discussion about it.
