Weight Issue

I have just "passed" three at-home preganancy tests, and I am a bundle of nerves.  I am going to be a first-time mom, and I couldn't be happier.  However, I am significantly overweight, and I am scared that this might be a problem.  I am planning to go see a doctor ASAP and have my thyroid checked.  I was wondering if anyone has been pregnant and had thyroid issues.  Is it possible to take medications for that without harming the baby?  Also, I would love advice/support from other overweight and obese moms and moms-to-be.  I am really stressed.

Re: Weight Issue

  • My sister was pregnant while on thyroid medication. I believe she had monthly blood tests, also, to see if her medication needed to be modifed during pregnancy.

    Congrats!

  • I am also overweight. The only thing my doctor cautioned me about was that I should only gain 15 pounds total and anything more than that could be problematic. Also, she let me know that the chances of high blood pressure could be higher. Good luck and congrats!
  • I have hypothyroidism. I take my synthetic thyroid hormone every day. There is no side effects to taking them, but I am closely monitored in case I need an adjustment.
  • After I got my round of  bloodwork back I was told I have a problem with my thyroid..I don't know if it's just pregnancy related or what...I don't know if I am going to go on medication during my pregnancy or not yet....I had my thyroid checked a while ago & it was fine...so I am wondering if it is only b/c of my pregnancy..I am going to consult my Primary Car physican

  • I weighed 250 when I got pregnant. I didn't have a single problem with my pregnancy, no morning sickness, no gestational diabetes, no pre-e. I gained about 15 lbs during pregnancy, and DS came out perfectly healthy. I don't know if you belong to Livejournal, but there is a community there that I frequent, www.livejournal.com/community/big_mothers and there is a plus size forum at ivillage and justmommies. Don't worry too much! Weight can be a small factor but there are a lot of women 300lbs+ who carry perfectly healthy babies, let alone wherever you are weight-wise.
  • I am overweight and pregnant but I don't have thyroid issues..

My doctor had no issue with my weight other than I won't gain as much weight as someone who is of "healthy" weight..

  • I too have hypothyroidism, and really not that bad. You do need to get your blood drawn monthly to make sure your levels aren't shifting. You are a bit more tired than usual but that is expected.?

  • I'm overweight and have had two successful pregnancies...  like the other posters wrote - you'll just have to keep your weight gain to a minimum.  I gained 15-18 lbs w/ both of mine.

I recommend walking or getting some kind of exercise as much as you can.  I try to do 30 mins a day on the treadmill or elliptical - keep the blood flowing!  It helps your recovery too!

    Good Luck!!!!!

  • Allicia, I have to say that your post could not have come at a more perfect time for me!  I'm also sig. overweight and have been obsessing about my weight even more now that the BFP came.  Just this morning, I was completely depressed about it and terrified of what might happen to my baby because of it.  Knowing that there's someone else worrying about the same thing - and reading the great and supportive posts from other nesties - has really helped calm my nerves.  My first appointment isn't until Nov. 10th and I have a ton of weight related questions that I want to ask.  Let's keep each other posted as we go along.  Smile
