First Time Moms Who Worked Out During Pregnancy: When did you deliver?

Let me preface this by saying I know everyone is unique and that most first-time moms deliver closer to 41 weeks. However, I've read some article that say that women who are active throughout their pregnancies deliver earlier than women who are not. If you were active throughout your first pregnancy, when did you deliver?

Re: First Time Moms Who Worked Out During Pregnancy: When did you deliver?

  • This was definitely not the case for me.  I ran a marathon and 2 5Ks during my pregnancy and kept running until the very, very end.  (My last run was 41 wks/2 days, the day before I was induced.)  I ran 5 days a week and did other work outs too and I had my baby at 41 wks/6 days, a c-section after a 4-day failed induction.  I had absolutely zero progress dilation wise before I was induced, so running and staying active did absolutely nothing in that regard.  However, other than delivery, I had a really easy pregnancy that I greatly attribute to staying active.

  • Everyone is different.

I wish I would have stayed more active at the end of my pregnancy and gained less weight, but I did yoga, ran and swam into my 2nd tri.  I went into labor at 40w1d, but after 48 hours of labor, my body wouldn't progress past 9.5cm dilated and I needed a c/s.

I don't think that staying active helps with when you'll go into labor.  But you will feel a lot better during and after pregnancy if you stay active and enjoy the things you enjoyed pre-pg

  • I fit the stereotype - easy pregnancy and easy delivery the day before my due date.

I think exercise had a lot to do with the easy part...but there are always other factors at play.  Maybe I was just lucky ;-)

  • I've just been doing body pump and walking since beginning of 2 trimester.  I'm still here:(

  • I ran until about 25 weeks then continued hiking (4-5 miles) until about 39 weeks.  I delivered at exactly 41 weeks.

  • I worked out through my entire pregnancy (including a LONG walk the day before I gave birth) and had DD at 38 weeks, 3 days.
  • I was running/cross-training until the day my water broke at 39w 5d.  I had a super easy and fast L&D and was back running at 2w PP.

  • I worked out and raced all throughout pregnancy. LO was born at 39 weeks via induction. She had ran out of fluid.
  • I didn't jog with my first, just walked,(it was too painful to jog once my belly got big) but I made a point to walk just about everyday... I started having braxton hicks contractions a month and half before my due date and ended up delivering about 3 weeks before my due date... if i wasn't put on bed rest I feel quite certain I would have delivered much earlier, just being on my feet working all the time was putting me in early labor.  But like you said everyone and every pregnancy is different... this time so far i have had no problems jogging at least 3 miles a day!!
  • I exercised throughout my entire pregnancy and Betty Jane was born on her due date. However, punctuality runs in my family :)
  • I walked, cycled or did the elliptical nearly every day of my pregnancy. My water broke 3 weeks early, about 4 hours after getting home from the gym.

  • I ran and spun until the end, however I was 4 days late.  But I do think that working out helped with my easy 15 minute labor!
  • I worked out (ran, spun, yoga, light lifting) until past my due date - all slightly modified. Baby Bix arrived at 40 weeks, 6 days. I ran / walked 3 miles of intervals the day before I was admitted...heck I even washed the car, rototilled the garden...anything to get him out.

And labor, I'm sorry to say, was not any easier.

It's all individual...I don't think there are any assumptions that can be made just because you work out...except that perhaps your pain tolerance is higher and you recover faster!

  • 40w exactly on the due date. Labor was 11 hours and quick recovery.
  • my friend ran until she was like 6 months I think, and then walked nearly every day after that....and she gave birth on her due date.
  • With DC#1 I swam, did the elliptical and attended spin classes till the day I was in labor.  She was 13 days early after 30 hours of labor.

DC#2 I ran/spun up to 2 days before labor and he was 3 days late after 24 hours of labor.

  • I ran daily up until the day I delivered. She came on her due date and it was a super fast easy delivery despite my age (38 at that time). Recovery was really easy too, I ran a marathon 2 months after birth.

  • Three weeks early. My labor was 3 hours start to finish and pushed for 30 min. I am afraid NOT to workout during this pregnancy! :)
  • I worked out throughout my entire pregnancy, was acutally at the gym the morning before I started having contractions and had my DS that night via c-section (he was breech).  I was 38 weeks & 1 day pregnant...so it may have helped me!   Good luck! :-)
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!

  • 42 weeks....baby did NOT want to come out.  Mandatory CSection due to no dilation, drop in baby, and baby being measure at 10 plus pounds.  I didn't run, but I did do step aerobics 2-3 times a week and walked the other days.
  • I worked out my entire pregnancy, spinning 3x a weeks, running 10-15 km a week as well as lifting 3x a week. I was in a spin class the day before I went into labour. I got to the hospital at 9am, and had my son at 450pm. I delivered at 39 weeks, 3 days. I don't know if my activity level had anything to do with it, but I HATED beong pregnant, so it being over with even a little bit early was worth it! I started walking @ days pp and was back at the gym spinning in a week. You feel sooo much better keeping active! It was the only thing that kept me sane!
  • I worked out until 38 weeks, walked, water aerobics, step, zumba, etc.  We moved the next week and my opinion is that is what put me into labor.  I had LO at 39 weeks, went into labor on my own, no meds and delivered my sunny-side baby after some intense back labor.  Btw, despite my super healthy lifestyle I gained 65lbs.  I had some pp issues that kept me from working out so I still have about 15 to lose and I am starting back at the gym next week.

  • I worked out throughout my pregancy and delivered at 38 weeks 3 days. I really believe working out helped during labor and delivery. I had not heard anything about delivering earlier if you are active, I think it was due to the sexy time we had the night before.

  • I was very active with both pregnancies, but more so with DD (first pregnancy). I was doing a bootcamp/spinning class until 38+ weeks. I went 10 days late and had to be induced. Labor and delivery were tough, but the pregnancy and recovery were very easy.
  • 39 weeks and 6 days
