I make cakes on the side and make my own buttercream all the time, I use crisco and water instead of butter and milk, it doesn't need to be refridgerated and is dairy free. And I've made the diet coke cake for people who can't eat eggs, comes out great!
it's only certain ones of the frostings and boxed cake mixes (my nephew is allergic to all milk products, so I know my mom has it memorized which things she can make.)
there is a certain Bisquick (the heartsmart maybe?) that is also OK and she uses it with Silk to make him pancakes and biscuits.

yeah that's "decorator icing" and not buttercream. Great for flowers & such though, as it's stable at room temp. Mouth feel is off for the cake nerds. flaxseed meal +water is my preferred egg sub.
and yeah, a lot of box mixes are dairy free, though I didn't note that since the one I was using wasn't. I usually don't use mixes but it was 99 cent halloween funfetti and I made an exception
Re: surprisingly dairy free treat
Yeah, that hydrogenated oil is bad.
I have made my own buttercream for years. A mess to make, but so good.
