Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

14 month old doesn't clap hands...

I'm starting to get a little nervous.  I know all toddlers develop on their own timeline but my son has never clapped his hands and has only waved twice- last week to the tv when a bunch of people were waving and yesterday to my sister.  But he never has clapped which I see all the other kids doing.

I brought it up to his doc at his 12 month visit and he said give it more time and we'll talk at his 15 month check up.  I'm just curious- anyone out there with a similiar situation?  He is otherwise super happy, loving, babbles away, says mama and repeats some words and is starting to walk.

  • DS used to wave frequently at about 12 ish months, but now he stopped waving as much or actually very rarely waves bye-bye. Same with clapping, he used to clap a lot when he used to be excited but now when he gets excited he jumps up and down. I don't think this is a concern for me.

  • DD is not clapping. she used to wave, and doesn't do that anymore either, except at bedtime when she's nursing and i say good nite. she loves it when i clap, but just won't do it on her own. i'm not too worried, and the pedi isn't worried at all. i figure she'll do it when she's ready.

  • DS was 16 mo before he stared clapping or waving. He still doesn't do either well but at least he started!
  • Thanks so much for the responses!  He is only saying mama and sometimes dadda and my sister said I should look into a speech therapist (her son has one, he has autism) and she really got in my head.  I'm going to relax and talk to his doctor later this month.  Thanks again!
  • DS claps, but only once or twice and not to express excitement--he just randomly does it. And he doesn't wave to people, only to football games (?!). He sees a neurologist who monitors his development (he had a stroke at birth) and she's not concerned.
  • How old is her son, and when was he diagnosed? I just read that boys speak 50 words less than girls during toddler years. I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. IMO, a speech pathologist is a bit much at your DS' age, I understand being concerned, but that seems like overkill. Like you said, bring it up with your pediatrician at his next appointment and see what they think!

  • He was diagnosed officially at 3 though he's been seeing a speech pathologist since 18 months.  He wasn't babbling at all and she knew something was wrong by 9 months- not smiling, not looking at them.  My son doesn't do any of those things but she's very hyper-aware of any 'delay' and feels Speech "couldn't hurt".  I told her I wasn't that worried about his speech and feel he is just taking his time with it (since he's babbling and starting to say some words).  Thanks again for being so supportive ladies!
  • Jackson doesn't clap.. he kind of flails his arms up and down when he gets excited, but he never claps them together.  He did start waving more recently though.

just curious why you think that?
  • DD didn't clap until 15 mo. Before that she did a modified arm swinging, hands meeting in the middle thing sometimes but that was it. Once she started clapping though, she hasn't stopped. She claps for everyone and everything now. She stopped waving when she started clapping.
