glucose test in morning - should I eat breakfast first?

Hey ladies,

I am going for my initial glucose test in the morning - my question is: should I eat breakfast before I go? My doctor specifically said this was not a fasting test, but do you think that either eating or not eating could skew the results? Or just make me feel like crap? I was speculating that maybe I should stick to protein (i.e., a yogurt or eggs) rather than carbs since the drink they give you is all carbs. I didn't want to add to my blood sugar levels by eating a bagel beforehand, but I don't want my blood sugar to spike from an empty stomach either.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Re: glucose test in morning - should I eat breakfast first?

  • The morning of my glucose test, I had scrambled eggs for breakfast, and I drank only water. I passed with flying colors. :) Just avoid anything sweet- that's what my OB nurse told me.

  • When I did it with dd I didn't eat before the test and I passed. With this pg I had to do one at 13 weeks (and I get to do it again...lucky me!) because I am high risk and I had to do baseline testing. I ate an apple before and I was fine. I think the main thing is not to eat anything sweet. Stay away from juice.

  • I opted out of this test - which my primary physician said was at my discretion since I had a BMI of 16 and was in excellence shape when I went in for my initial physical. So I?m not going to try an influence you either way. My SIL however did take that test ? she had an egg, some fruit-yogurt, and a bran muffin about two hours before her test was administered - she came through without any problems. So you do what you feel is necessary in your case. If your test is within four to six hours of getting up - I would have a little something just so you are not weak from hunger. GL in your test!

  • My OB suggested scrambled eggs or toast w/peanut butter and some water. Nothing sugary or any fruit. She said a high protein breakfast is a good thing :) Good Luck!

  • My midwife said to not eat for an hour before.  She didn't say what to eat, but I'd go with no sweets and for sure no juice.

  • My OB's exact words were...."I want you to eat...just don't go have IHOP for breakfast."  :)

    Good luck tomorrow!

  • My dr told me to eat like normal. She said one meal isn't going to show I have GD or the other way around.

  • I didn't eat before and I didn't pass. I have my three hour on Tuesday.

  • I was told to eat because my OB specifically said that pregnant women should not be skipping meals.  But, like others have said, to avoid sugar.  The receptionist making my appointments also said to avoid gum.

  • I have to eat some type of breakfast to avoid upset stomach so since I did not have to fast I had scrambled eggs and water about an hour before my test and I passed.

  • I was told to eat fairly normal, but nothing high in sugar.  My doc recommended eggs, so I had 2 eggs scrambled, a piece of toast, and a glass of milk a couple hours before the test.  I find out my results today hopefully!

  • I personally think you should eat whatever you normally would on a normal day. Because lets say you dont eat and the test comes back fine, but if you had eaten what you normally did and you would have failed it.

You want them to pick up on something if something is wrong. You certainly don't want to "cheat" the test if you get what i mean.

OMG, that's what my OB said too!

I plan on eating a non-sugary cereal & skipping my usual glass of juice.  I've been debating whether the banana I usually have on my cereal should be skipped.  I'll probably avoid eating a really sweet snack the night before, just to be safe.

  • I would definitely say if you are going to eat anything that it should be something high in protein and no or low carbs.  I'd stay away from fruit, sweets, cereal, even yogurt often has a lot of carbs.  Eggs or peanut butter is a good idea, although if your test is more than 2 hours after you have breakfast, you should be fine if you don't have GD.  Good luck!

  • My appointment is at 3 PM and my instructions were to eat protein at lunch, nothing sweet.  If I were you, I would eat breakfast but make it protein -- eggs, bacon, nuts.
