Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you let LO watch TV while they eat?

DD doesnt like sitting in her high chair for more than 5 min so I have to turn on the TV sometimes to get through the meal. I know its a bad habit but sometimes you gotta do what you can. Its not every meal but usually 1 or 2 a day.

Re: Do you let LO watch TV while they eat?

  • Nope. We sit down at the table as a family every night with no TV on so we can talk about our day.

  • Sometimes, mostly when there is only one parent home.  For example, this weekend DH was gone and E and I had breakfast and lunch yesterday in front of the TV.

Its a cross between needing her to be distracted to get things done, like making the meal and the fact that getting her into her highchair and keeping her entertained is often a 2 person show.

I don't think its a horrible thing and if its the only way you have a peaceful meal then go for it.  You can make changes later in life.

  • We dont let him watch TV while eating during lunch and dinner.  He eats those meals in the high chair in the kitchen with us.  Breakfast and snacks we are more flexible with...feeding him as he plays in the living area with us.  We also have a snack catcher that we like so that he can feed himself snacks while playing.

  • No, LO actually never watches TV.  The only time we have it on when he's awake is to have the music stations playing while we cook dinner.  We either eat out, or eat together at the table as a family.
  • No. All his meals are eaten in the kitchen in his highchair.

  • Sometimes.  It depends what I make, lol.  Pizza, for sure we sit and watch tv as we eat it.
  • Maybe 2 or 3 times a week.  Usually, together watching football or something like that.

  • Yes- we're a tv family. I have tv's everywhere (including the kitchen where he eats in his high chair) and I like it on if we're home.  He likes it.  He talks all day long so I already know what he did with his day and what he thinks/feels about it by the abundance or lack of "No" responses.  Later, when he's in school and I'm not with him every waking moment of the day, that can change, but right now, it's meatloaf and yo gabba gabba on the menu.
  • He watches it while drinking his milk.  It's only twice a day for about 8 minutes so I figure it's fine.  He eats his meals in the kitchen though.

  • Sometimes I leave the TV on during breakfast which she can see from her high chair. She doesn't really watch it, but once in awhile it catches her eye. I try to make sure during lunch/dinner there is no TV on ... unless DH is watching football.

  • I have a time or two, but he gets SO focused on the TV, he won't eat.  So, no TV.

  • Never.  You can't see our TV from the kitchen though but even if you could we would turn it off.  I have seen what that habit did for my SIL kids, they won't sit in their seat for more than two seconds without getting up to go to the tv, or walking/jumping around with food in their mouths.  Most of that is lack of discipline though because they act that way in restaurants too but my sister's kid's will stay in their seats and watch tv while they eat..I find it distracts DD if we are over there eating so I prefer not to do that with her at home.

  • You can see the TV from our kitchen, and we usually have it on while we eat. DS doesn't really watch it, but if he turned around to look at the TV, I wouldnlt freak out. Its more background noise for us.

  • Not usually during the day, but for dinner the tv is always on! Mama needs to watch Wheel Of Fortune!! Smile
  • Rarely, when we've made a pizza or snacks and are eating while watching a football game. Otherwise, no. You can't see our tv from the kitchen anyway. We watch plenty of tv around here, so I'm not going to judge, but i personally don't see a reason to have one on when doing EVERYTHING.

    Exactly this.

  • No, but I also don't let DS watch TV, at all.

When he does, it def won't be during meal time.  I'm a big believer in focusing on and enjoying your food, and meals being family time.

  • Not really. We eat in the kitchen and our TV is in the living room. But sometimes for their snack I'll let them have their snack cups in the living room, and sometimes it's when the TV is on.

  • We purposely turn the tv off when we have dinner. We turn music on and keep her in her high chair as long as possible. If she is freaking out we will allow her to go play but we try not to do that.
  • For breakfast, DS usually watches TV. This is usually with either DH, while I'm still sleeping, or I'm with him, and drinking coffee.

At dinnertime, we don't have the TV on, and eat as a family.

  • Nope. You can not see the TV from the dining room. So its not even an option. We moved 6 months ago and we did watch TV while we ate back in our townhouse. I guess it was a habit. Not sure if I would have let DD watch it. I guess its good that we had to break that habit!

  • DD, never.  But she eats before DH is even home, so we never eat as a family.  DH and I always eat later and yes, eat in front of the TV.  It's a bad habit and I hope to be sitting and eating all together in the next year, when DD gets a little older and can wait a little longer for dinner.

  • Not usually.  Typically we sit at the dinner table and eat together as a family.  I like the quiet time to unwind after a long work day.  But sometimes we do watch tv - like last night we ordered pizza and watched Hocus Pocus.  We just brought DS's highchair in the living room next to me.  =)

  • DS watches maybe 15 minutes a few times a week.  I mainly turn it on when he hasn't eaten much, but is willing to let me put food in his mouth when he watches.  The pedi wants us to do whatever we can to get food in his mouth, so that's just one of our tactics. DS actually eats best when he's sitting in my lap and I'm reading him a book.  Not the best habits, but I'm willing to do just about anything to get my failure to thrive kid to eat.

  • We only have 1 tv and it's no where near where DS eats so, no.

  • Do I let him? Yes, sometimes. But it's a rare, special treat...as a general rule, he doesn't watch TV. I wish we could eat as a family, but DH isn't usually here for dinner :(
  • No, never. We all sit at the dining room table table together.

  • No, we always eat together in the kitchen.  DS is always in his highchair for all 3 meals.  Snacks- living room.  A few nights a week, DH works later and DS and I eat in the kitchen as well.
  • No. We are tv-less.
