Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Do you buy second-hand clothes?

I took DS with me to "Once Upon a Child" yesterday, and got him 6 pairs of GAP and Ralph Lauren jeans and 10 long sleeved tops for $45!?

I told a friend of mine this, and she said second-hand clothes are gross since someone else already wore them. I don't get that at all. Especially since our babies grow so fast.
Do you buy second-hand clothes, or do you buy brand new only??

Re: Do you buy second-hand clothes?

  • I don't buy them new but I have a friend who has two sons and a nephew.  She sends me the clothes her boys grow out of and I put them on my son.  I haven't bought anything for him since he was 3 months old.  They are the same exact outfits I would have bought at Target/Kohl's/BRU so why not?

  • Tell your friend she's a snob.

I haven't bought many clothes (got a lot at the shower), but Alaina has a ton of hand me downs that I got from a friend. What I have bought, I just get at Wal-Mart or Target. Cheap.

  • My parents are really into yard sales so DS has a lot of secondhand clothes.  I think it is crazy not to use them because DS has clothes with tags still on that he is already grown out of.  It is such a waste.  Yesterday my mom was at her church rummage sale and got DS five items for 5 cents each... so a total of a quarter for a couple onesies, a sweater, a pair of pants and a bib.

Obviously you are washing the clothes first, so I don't see what the big deal is.

  • garage sales and hand me downs are my friends!  I can't see paying full price for something he might only wear a couple of times.
  • I definitely buy second hand clothes, although I can never find anything as adorable as the new stuff in the stores :) I've never gone to an actual baby second hand store though, so maybe I'd have better luck if I did that. I don't think it's gross

  • jenfairies- Yeah...unfortunately my friend is kind of a snob. She comes from a "silver-spoon" background. Her and I are on completely different ends of the scale. ***NOTE: She's more of an?acquaintance?than a real friend.?

  • Absolutely!  We shop consignment all the time....babies barely wear the clothes the way it is, so if you buy them used they look brand new!

  • I buy both new and used. I am picky about used stuff, but if it is in good condition with no tears, holes, stains etc, then I will buy it. At a rummage sale this summer, I got DD 2 pairs of brand new jeans with the tags still on, for $1 each, along with 2 pairs of jeans that looked brand new but had no tags, for 25 cents each, Not too shabby :-)

I have also been to Once Upon a Child before, and remember finding some good deals. I would go more often, only the nearest one is a few hours away from me. It was before DD #1 was born that I was there.

  • I didn't buy any second hand clothes but I have received second hand clothes from friends whose children have grown out of them. So far I have only bought DS 1 outfit because I have received so many presents.

  • I would if his Grammy, Grandma, and godfather didn't buy him enough clothes for three babies.

I agree, your friend is a snob.

I make sure that the clothes are in good condition and wash them- that is it!

  • I don't buy them because my sister has two boys (3 year old and 1 year old) so I get clothes from her.  However, if I didn't get most of DS's clothes from her, I would totally buy second-hand clothes.  Baby clothes are so expensive and they grow out of sizes in just a few weeks. It's not gross, it's smart.

  • I have gotten clothes at consignment shops and garage sales. I don't see a problem with it, especially since they were probably only worn a couple of times before I bought them anyway.
  • I haven't bought any but probably would. What's the difference if a friend gives you clothes in the same condition and you wash them?

My sister keeps giving me boxes and boxes of clothes from my niece. DD has enough clothes to cover 5 kids until at least the 12 month size right now. haha

  • I do all the time. I have found some great deals!!
  • I have FOUR nieces.  I have about 10 buins downstairs ranging from NB to 24 month clothes.  We are set.  I still do buy used and new clothes since I have to contribute to the bins too!

  • I got so many clothes from friends that I really haven't had to buy much at this point.  I don't see a problem with it though.  Most people I know say their kids had so many clothes that they really didn't wear all of them - they still ahve things with tags on them.  I don't get much of a chance to go out shopping so most of mine is done online so DD really doens't have any 2nd hand clothes
  • Some of you girls are lucky! I wish I had baby boys in my family that could give me clothes for DS. Our family is all baby girls. That's why people were so shocked I had a boy. lol
  • I love resale shops! I have found awesome stuff!
  • Both. Lately we have been getting my nephews hand me downs. DS skipped a whole size so I gave them to family that is expecting a boy.
  • sort of...we have a boutique resale shop "Kids Carousel" where I cosign DD's clothes.  I use the money in my account there to get other previously worn clothes.

So, while I am not buying them w/ cash, I do use them! I pph handmedowns.  I love giving them to people who can use them, and I love receiving them.

I even like to send them to Nesties if I know they have a kid that will fit the right gender/size.  It's good for the planet to recycle!!

  • Yes.  We have been going to "kid to kid" which sounds like the store you went to.  I get sleepers for $1.50 and we didn't really get any at showers.  They have cute stuff that is like new and since he will grow out of it so quick I can't justify spending much more than that on clothes.  After finding that store it makes me feel guilty for spending $10 on outfits elsewhere!
  • No.  My DH has a weird thing about used clothes.  I totally don't mind, but he does.  However, my mother purchased a lot of really nice, european clothes from a lady in her office for Sydney and she wears that stuff...I didn't tell DH where they came from.  So I am all for it, DH is weird about it...
  • i heart once upon a child
  • If they are in good condition then I am all for it. Why spend more than you have to when they are going to grow out of them so quickly.
  • YES!! I have packed up so many things that DS has only worn once, or even not at all. I definately buy/use second hand. Some things cama from a yard sale, some things were givin to me by my cousin who has a little boy. They grow way too fast to buy ONLY brand new clothes.

  • Well, I have a nephew that is only about a year older than Ethan, so we get a ton of nice hand-me-downs from him. I haven't really had to buy any.

BUT, I would TOTALLY buy 2nd hand. I think that it is not only economical, but environmentally friendly. The clothes are in great shape most of the time because kids grow so fast, and you aren't contributing to the waste stream by purchasing new stuff.

I am ALL ABOUT 2nd hand stuff.

  • Baby and infant clothes, yes.

Evan's bigger-kid clothes I just buy new since toddlers beat the crap out of their clothes.

But for babies, I don't mind buying second hand. MOst times, babies are out of the clothes before they've really even worn them.
