1st Trimester

Subchorionic Hemorrhage

I'm 9 weeks now and have had this hemorrhage since week 5.  The OB says I'm in danger of MC but he can't believe I haven't already so we're praying.  I'm on bed rest and bored to tears.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Or have any info that may be helpful.  I'm very worried and would like to know what my chances really are.

Re: Subchorionic Hemorrhage

  • I had this with my daughter from weeks 5-10 and was on bedrest as well. As you can see from my ticker, all went well! At my 13 week appointment it was no longer visible and I went on to have a very uneventful pregnancy. I know it's hard not to worry. Just keep doing what you are doing and stay hydrated. My dr explained to me that it would heal itself and that after delivery you would be able to see the healed scar on the placenta where it reattached. Kinda gross but interesting! I don't belong to this board but accidently clicked on 1st tri and saw your title and just wanted to encourage you :)

  • I have one and I think your OB is crazy saying you are likely to m/c.  Of course it is always a possibility, but I think the stats are that 5% or something like that m/c.  Most go on to have perfectly healthy children.  My OB doesn't have me on bed rest - I'm going about my normal life and have no problems.

  • I had one at six weeks but has seemed to heal itself.  I haven't had any bleeding or spotting for 5 weeks. It started to reabsorb in about a 8 days and looked much smaller in u/s.  I was on pelvic rest and my RE said to just take it easy - no lifting, exercise, cleaning, etc.  Basically I was just to go to work, come home and sit on the couch.

When I was released to an OB, he referred to it as a 'threatened m/c' (which was scary), but he said as long as I was taking care of myself it should reabsorb.

    Good luck to you!

  • I had one with DS.  I was on pelvic rest, but not bed rest.

  • I had one at about 6-7 weeks that was diagnosed after I was spotting and cramping.  It resolved on its own about a week later.  I was on bedrest for 5 days, pelvic rest throughout my first trimester, as well as restrictions on lifting, exercising, cleaning, etc.  So far, I haven't had any further problems.

My SIL had a similar situation at 11 weeks with her 2nd child and one of my best friends also had one at 16 weeks.  Both were on bedrest temporarily and both went on to have perfectly healthy babies.

Yes there is an increased rate of m/c, so your OB is not crazy telling you that as a previous person posted, it just depends on how large the tear is.  The prognosis is usually worse if the hemorrhage occurs in the late 1st trimester or early 2nd trimester, so you're in good shape in that regard.  It's also a good thing that it's been 4 weeks since you've been diagnosed and your body is probably healing itself.  Most do resolve on their own and most women go on to have uncomplicated pregnancies.

The only thing you can do is rest, stay hydrated, and try your best to relax (I know the last is the hardest thing to do).  Now would be a good time to take up a hobby (scrapbooking, knitting, crafts, etc.) to try and keep your mind occupied while your body heals.

Good luck to you and you're in my prayers.

I never said their wasn't an increased risk, but from the comment she made it sounded like her OB is expecting m/c at any second.  Plenty of people have SCH and go on to have healthy pregnancies.

  • Thanks for posting this. I've been having spotting (and now bleeding) for almost a week. I had a sonogram on Friday and found a heartbeat, etc., but, I'm now experiencing bleeding instead of just brown spotting and was almost convinced that I'd miscarried this weekend after all.

I'm currently a little dissatisfied with my provider and will be seeking another one (I won't get into details), but, this leaves me a bit uninformed and, frankly, scared. You posting this information allowed me to research what SCH is and give me hope that maybe there's an actual explanation for my strange symptoms.

Thanks so much for sharing! I wish you a H & H pregnancy.

  • I had a SCH with Ryan, discovered at 7 weeks 1 day. My doctor at the time (I switched) was VERY laid back didn't order pelvic rest, bedrest or anything. But my DH pretty much made me relax for 2 weeks and I had very understanding employers, who gave me the time off with no problem at all.

Good luck, I'll keep you in my T&Ps

  • They found one at my 7 week u/s but didn't even tell me about it because it was so small. Last night I had some bleeding and freaked. I called them this morning and then said that it was probably the subchorionic hemorrhage coming out. I had the red blood only once. I've had a bit of very faint brown spotting since. Does that make sense?

  • I started bleeding yesterday which turned into brown spotting and stopped by bed time.  This morning I passed a quarter size blood clot and got real scared. I called the OB and they had me come in for an US. Thank god everything is ok.  The Dr said I had a subchorionic hemorrhage which caused the release of the blood clot. She said they are fairly common and generally don't hurt the fetus.

I hope everything works out fine.

Thanks so much for the post. This sounds similar to what I experienced. I have an u/s on thursday so hopefully all will look ok.

I feel like I've had more twinges and aches in my lower abdomen today, although it might just be in my head! Thankfully I've had no cramping.
