GD...and Halloween!

Oh, what a time of year to have GD!

My DD is 2- and yesterday was her first "real" Trick or Treating. She caught on pretty fast! So of course now I have a house FULL of goodies that I can't *really* touch (probably a blessing in disguise!)

Anyway, my plan is to freeze my faves (aka Snickers - YUM) and have 1 a day (the mini, of course) in the afternoons when my sugar is usually low (70's-80's)....I figure they have protein, too so what the hay!

Of course, I'm packing a little in the hospital bag too. Mama needs her chocolate to recover!

OMG, I am such a dork for even posting this- any of you ladies rationing the goodies, too?

Re: GD...and Halloween!

  • We dont do Halloween, but I know exactly what you are talking about.  Our church has a special service and for several weeks before hand we all bring in candy so the kids get a treat bag.  It is killing me!!!

  • Per my mom's recommendation (she is diabetic), I bought only Halloween candy I don't like. :p  We have a ton leftover, but at least I don't want to eat it!

  • yes, the leftover kit kat bars are calling my name....i told DH we're saving them and i'm eating them in the hospital! :)

halloween is also my birthday, so i also didn't get to enjoy my birthday cake. and next up is thanksgiving, which is my favorite food holiday EVER and will surely be a diabetic's nightmare.

this is a terrible time of year to have GD!

  • I'm hoping they'll be some left in a few weeks after I have this baby.  W/ ds I had gd over thanksgiving and christmas.  That was tough w/ all the holiday parties.  You don't realize how carb intensive thanksgiving is until you stare at the dinner and wonder what to put w/ your slice of turkey. :(
  • Ugh it blows. I admittedly ate a bunch if candy last night... Now I shall ration it out to one or two pieces a day, eaten WITH other food. My numbers do ok if I do that!! Most of my candy is being donated to work though!

  • Ugh, I watched MH pig out on the candy last night and it made me so sad.  But for every piece he ate, I made him put the same piece in a pile for me. I'm saving it for after my delivery and I will NOT BE SHARING it with him :)  I ate a few pieces here and there and was ok.

  • I agree this is a terrible time of year to have GD, with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.  We actually didn't buy candy this year for the trick or treaters which made me feel bad, but I was thankful this morning when there was no chocolate in the house when I had a craving.  It's better to just not have it around.  I'm more concerned about Christmas, I think, because I'm a huge sweets and carbs eater and I'm really going to have to watch it!  I'm already making lists of the things I'm going to eat after my little boy's born.

Canadian Thanksgiving is in October so I've already been through it.  To be honest, it wasn't bad at all.  Turkey is obviously fine.  I enjoyed small portions of yams and roasted potatoes and stuffing.  All good.  We had a great broccoli - cauliflower casserole with cheese and I had pumpkin pie with unsweetened whipping cream for dessert.  I honestly didn't feel like I missed out on a thing.  My portions for some of the foods may have been a little smaller than usual but I was happy that our recipe for pumpkin pie is naturally lower carb already.  I also made a casserole of pumpkin pie filling and baked it up.  That way I could enjoy the best part and not worry about the extra carbs in the pie crust.

I didn't make it for my normal walk after dinner to lower my blood sugar but it stayed within range.

Just thought I'd give you hope that some of your holiday favourite meals may not be a bust after all!

  • I was just diagnosed, right before trick or treating, and man I was pissed! We took our son out 3 different times too! I never thought to freeze the candy, though, and I am going to do that now!
