Is morning sickness hereditary?

I'm just curious because I haven't had any nausea or morning sickness, and my mom said she never did either. I know every pregnancy is different, but are you more likely not to have morning sickness if your mom didn't? I really haven't had many symptoms (though my husband says my most prominent one is heightened emotions, haha), so I constantly worry about this.

On another note, our first u/s is on Thursday! I'm so nervous but so excited at the same time.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Is morning sickness hereditary?

  • I am not sure. With all of my other ones I had horrible m/s the whole pregnancy. This time I haven't had any. Just severe food aversion. count the blessings :D

  • I highly doubt it. My mom had severe sickness with all three of us. She should of been in the hospital. She only gained 11 pounds with my brother, which was the 1st child.

I had zero with DD and her twin. Last twin pregnancy I was on Zofran and lost 7lbs in the 1st 9 weeks. I was on Progesterone with them. Now this pregnancy I am nausous all day and night, massive food aversions too. However getting better now.

  • There may be a genetic component. My mom never had morning sickness, and I haven't had any yet, with either pregnancy.

  • That's a good question. I don't see how there could be, but there seems to be a correlation. My mom and my sister didn't have any m/s with their pregnancies, and I didn't with my first two. This one seems to be an outlier. I've heard other similiar stories, but it could be coincidence.

  • My mom said she really wasn't sick with my brother or I...she just remembers a few occassions where she started to feel a little queasy, but never threw up.  I think I am worse off than she ever was, so I am not sure if it is hereditary or not.

  • I don't know if it is or not, but my mother and her 2 sisters had horrible morning sickness, as did both of my sisters, and it looks like I am headed that way too. Its already pretty bad.
  • Just so you know, I didn't get M/S until 8 weeks, so just because you don't have it now doesn't mean you won't get it. Enjoy the time while you can and hopefully you won't get it at all.
  • Each pregnancy is very different from one another.  My mother was sick so with her first pregnancy she got hospitalized, the second she was 100% fine and with me she was sick enough to be on the couch or in bed for 6 weeks straight.

My first I had horrible m/s by now and this time I do not.

  • I don't know but I haven't had any real m/s so far just a few times something has not smelled right.  My mom says she was the same way.  She only remember being sick once.  I am just really thankful I am the same as her.

  • I've heard that they were somewhat connected. I asked my mom all sorts of questions about her 2 pregnancies and so far, I'm right on track with her.

No real morning sickness, just a stuffy nose and bit of light headedness. Hopefully I keep up with her symptoms, or lack there of. She said both pregnancies were easy-peasy.

  • I think symptoms during pregnancies are commonly similar in moms and daughters.

My mom didn't have m/s with any of her 3 pregnancies, and so far I haven't either. But, we both had/have tender breasts as the most dominant symptom!

  • I think so. Neither my mom, grandma or aunt had MS.
  • I don't know what the "real" answer is...but so far it's been for me. My Mom wasn't sick at all and I haven't been yet either.

  • Neither my mom nor my sister had notable morning sickness.  Though I have been a little more nauseated with this pregnancy than my last, I haven't had anything really notable either (i.e., I haven't felt so miserable I needed to skip work or other functions).  There could be something to the hereditary thing although I've never heard about m/s being hereditary.
  • In my case, it's not at all correlated. My mom wasn't sick a day of her four pregnancies. I was nauseous on and off throughout the day with my first, threw up about once a week for the first trimester. With my second I was really nauseous in the afternoons and puked every day for the first trimester. This time I'm really nauseous all the time unless I'm asleep, but haven't thrown up at all. If you aren't sick or nauseous, I say enjoy it!!!
