? for the allergy mamas

DD appears to have hives. There are tiny pimple-like bumps on her stomach and back - some are just the bumps and some have some redness around them. She's had them since Saturday, and the on-call pedi told us to give her benadryl, which didn't seem to do anything. Since she still has them, we're taking her in tonight to have them checked out, but in the meantime...

Did LO ever get hives and what did you do for them? Do you know what in particular was the problem? And what are those top 8 foods that LOs have reactions to?

I can't recall eating anything unusual (she's not on solids yet, and only has breast milk). I did get a new leave-in conditioner and use it for 2 days prior to the reaction, so that seems like a possibility. She's doesn't seem to be having any other reaction - she's happy, sleeping fine, diapers are fine, and she seems completely unfazed by the little bumps.

Re: ? for the allergy mamas

  • LO got hives 2 Sundays ago - we don't think it was a food allergy, like you I didn't remember having anything weird to eat and hadn't done anything different.  The only new variable was that we had started a new small group through church, and the folks hosting had a cat.

We gave Benadryl, and she was fine the next day.

  • DD's hives are usually larger welts that start out as tiny bumps and quickly progress unless medicated. She had one bout prior to her allergy testing that required her to have benadryl every 6hrs for close to 2 weeks! But usually one or two doses takes care of the hives.

The Top 8 are milk, eggs, peanuts, treenuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy.

We found out DD is allergic to both cats and dogs, which is likely what caused her long-term reaction.. could your LO be allergic to any pets?

Ugh - I hope not. Our dog will be very upset if we find that she is allergic to dogs, but it has only been recently that the two of them have started interacting. I thought that kids didn't develop environmental allergies until a bit later? Unless it is later already!
