Where is it all going?!

I honestly don't understand how to create a grocery budget.  I use coupons, and go to the $ saving sites for deals, but how in the hell did I spend $170 this weekend on groceries?!  I always make a list (with recipe ingredients) and usually don't stray from that.  I buy all the normal stuff, mostly fresh.  The only thing I buy organic is milk.  I just don't understand how to fix this!  I would have to make my list but then also know how much the store is charging for the items I want!  Argh!

ps.  I even saved $20 in coupons and still was $170.

Re: Where is it all going?!

  • Did that include diapers or high priced meats?

  • No diapers or any household products.  I did buy some chicken and ground beef.  1lb for each of those.
  • Where are you shopping?  Are you making sure you're getting the best deal in town?  I'm not sure, that sounds like a lot to me.  I spent $110, that included meat AND some household items AND halloween candy yesterday, and I forgot my coupons.
  • $170!!!  How many people are you feeding? And what kind of dinners are you making? That's crazy.

Just a local grocery chain.  I'm sure it's just the same as the other 'big' grocery chain in town.

  • Yah, that sounds like a lot.  I bought beef and chicken as well as the other ingredients for our menu for the week, snacks, milk, some Halloween stuff and $7 leave in conditioner for dd and I still spent less than $90.

Where do you shop?  I just don't think it's possible for us to spend that much for a week of food without toiletries, diapers, household stuff, or hosting Thanksgiving!

LOL, I know!  It's just for me, DH and Luke.  I have dinners from today until Saturday.  Some little lunch options, but we usually eat leftovers for lunch.  I have a couple pasta recipes, meatloaf, chili, sweet and sour chicken, greek pizza, and a breakfast bake.

  • How much do you normally spend? Is this a lot more than average? $170 for groceries doesnt sound crazy to me. I spend about $150-200/week on average at the grocery store (it usually includes household items, but not always).

  • And like I said, lots of fresh fruit, some fresh veggies, and milk.

  • That's a lot for one week's worth of food. Are you buying all name brands? We buy generics as much as possible and it helps cut  the grocery cost tremendously.

I suppose we usually spend about $120-140 on average.  So I guess it's not too far off that, but I was hoping to even cut that a bit.  Blah.

Same here.  I think it depends on your location and the amount of fresh vs processed stuff you buy.  Did that amount include any alcohol?  Buying cheaper/less wine helped cut our budget a little.

  • I don't know where you are at, but we always go to Aldi and then Wal-Mart for our grocery shopping.

I get as much as I can at Aldi.  Usually cheese, eggs, milk, pasta, frozen chicken breasts, etc.  There are certain things that we don't like from there, but most of it tastes great.

Then we get the name brand stuff we have to get at Wal-Mart.  (Pop, bread, cereal, etc.).  I try to use coupons if I can.

We also buy a quarter of beef every year and a pig so that we have our freezer stocked and don't have to buy meat that often.

If we have to buy cleaning items, paper products, baby items, etc. it can get expensive, but I try to meal plan around what we already have in the house and choose meals that I don't have to buy much to make.

This! When we get alcohol it adds up FAST.

We also utilize our chest freezer and stock up on chicken, ground beef, cube steak, and other meats when on sale. Then some weeks I don't even have to buy meat. Same for canned goods and chicken stock...we keep lots of beans and tomatoes and soup in our pantry and I buy several when I get a good deal.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
