This may seem like a dumb question, but how does recycling work here? I've seen the deposit thing at the groceries... do I leave caps on the bottles? Is it just for aluminum & plastic? What about everything else? Are there recycling centers around for the cardboard/paper, etc? I also thought I saw something about it being illegal to throw away recyclable materials... is that right?
Any tips on how all this works for a tired and overwhelmed momma would be wonderful!
Thanks!
Re: brand new to MI... ?recycling
Depends on where you live. Some communities have curbside recycling, others you can get it as part of your trash pick up if its private trash pick up. Your neighbors should know. Most places I've lived do 1 & 2 plastic, magazines/newspaper, cardboard, glass, and cans.
For deposit bottles its anything with a deposit (mostly pop bottles and red bull) and thats plastic, cans or glass. In grocery stores they have the machines you just feed them in. It depends on the store on whether or not they want the caps taken off the pop bottles. The machines say what material they take. You'll get a receipt and get the $ off your shopping order or can just go to a cashier and get the cash. If you bought pop in your former state usually the grocery store machine here won't take it (different barcode) so you can just recycle it.

Bottle recycling on pop, beer, etc is done at any grocery store and includes plastic, glass and aluminum. All of these beverages that are recyclable at these centers are marked with the MI $.10 deposit info and you'll pay $.10 more than the cost when purchasing.
Recycling your materials at home depends on the area you live. Like the PP said, some communites have curb side pickup in which case your trash collecter or city should provide you a bucket to use for these items and you just set it out on the same day as your garbage. In my area we can recycle anything that has the recyclable triangle on it. Paper, plastics, metal, glass, etc. I recycle as much as possible up to and including the cardboard from the toilet paper rolls.
If for some reason your city doesnt participate in the curbside recycling services, there are still options for drop off recycling. Check out this website for some info: https://www.recyclingmichigan.com/lower-michigan-recycling-centers/
