DH & I are are planning to CD for a number of reasons but money is one of the big ones. While I know that it will be loads less than sposies, I have no idea what it might actually cost. How much did you spend on your stash (and how many do you have)?
Re: How much did your stash cost?
Mine cost about $1150 - but it's a two-baby stash. Before I started shopping in anticipation of DD2, I had spent about $700. Now that I've got two, though, I am finding that I need to wash every day (otherwise I have to run two loads so that I don't overstuff the washer - which keeps the diapers from getting as clean). So I will probably sell off a dozen or so diapers, which I anticipate getting something like $100-130 back for. That would bring me down to a little over $1000 for two kids. Diapering them in sposies would cost me $3500-$4500, so I'm saving a lot of money.
(Also, my stash is by no means bare-bones. You can build a functional stash for much less than this).

Around $1000. That includes diapers that I've bought and later sold, i.e. if I bought a diaper for $10 and sold it for $6, then I count that diaper as costing $4 towards that total.
I have about 115 diapers. Mostly pockets and prefolds, with a few AIOs and fitteds thrown in.
A few things to keep in mind:
- I've been CD'ing for 2 years, so it's not like I dropped $1000 all at once.
- That includes diapers for two kids, although not at the same time. (DD was daytime potty trained when DS was born.)
- That includes some diapers that DS has outgrown but I'm saving in case we have a third baby, and some diapers that I'm waiting for DS to grow into.
- That includes inserts, liners, wetbags, laundry detergent... you name it. Everything I've bought to assist with CD'ing.
Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)
$130 so far, but I am spending another $45 today.
I have 20 used BG OS 3.0. I am getting 8 AIOs today. Then I am done until she grows out of the AIOs.
I have bought all my stuff used through Craigs List because I am in this to save money first. I work part time and want to keep that up as long as financially possible, so saving $$ is first priority.

Most of my diapers are 2nds, as you can see. I also have .5 yard of fleece I bought for $2.50 to use for lining, and a diaper pail we got for $14. Those 2 aren't included in the total.
That's our NB stash. I figure when the baby is outgrowing NB sizes I will sell off the NB stuff and use the size Ss and prefolds until I can buy new diapers with the money from the NB stuff.
I've spent about $450 for my stash. I've got a WIDE variety of dipes:
24 NB prefolds, 24 infant prefolds, around 15 pockets, 4 BG AIOs, Flips, gPants and tons of covers.
My $450 also includes diaper pail, 2 pail liners, 2 wetbags, cloth wipes and a whole mess of snappis (got a deal on Craigslist).
If money's an issue now just buy what you need for the early stages. I've probably got enough to last thru potty training (although I know I'll buy more). My NB stash cost about $50 which I think is pretty good. Probably about the same as we'd spend on disposables, but I can use these as inserts and for the next kiddo.
I spent a total of $315
$222 on store-bought stash (22 pocket diapers - 20 were seconds 2 were bought from a yard sale still in the package)
$12 for wipes - I bought 4 yards of fabric to make 50 double layer wipes
$50 for various fabrics to make some fitted newborn diapers/covers with the darling diaper free newborn pattern. It's really easy and I whipped up 20 of them in no time at all with upcycled fabric from the thrift store or fabric I had on hand. If you don't want to make them you could use prefolds and covers for the newborn stage which would be cheap as well.
$31 on accessories (aplix/velcro, Elastics, etc)
