Is Proactiv safe during pregnancy?

have been using proactiv for about 10 years and it has been good for controlling my acne.  When I use it with other presciptions it makes my skin almost flawless. I want to stop using proactiv and meds and use more natural products on my skin.  The issue is I stopped using proactiv for a few months (4 months to be exact) and I had gotten a year's worth of acne!  It was horrible.  I felt like I was a teenager again.  I heard that other people experienced the same thing when they tried to stop using proactiv.

So my question is:

Is anyone using proactiv while pregnant or did the doctor advise against it?  This is another reason why I want to stop using it before I have kids.  But of course I don't want to break out again!  That was horrible.

Re: Is Proactiv safe during pregnancy?

  • I think it depends on who you ask and the phase of the moon. Some OBs say it's fine, others say it's not. Ask your OB and go from there is really all the advice I can share.

  • I was told to continue using it during my pg - baby girl is healthy as a horse!

  • I was concerned about it as well so I called my doctor and she said to keep using it.  But like mentioned before ask your doctor b/c there are some that say to stay away from it.
  • My OB said to stay away from salycic acid, but anything with benzoyl peroxide was fine.  Someone had a post about this a while ago, and there was a comment saying that there was fine print on the ProActiv bottle saying not to use while pregnant.
  • I'm not pregnant (yet ;) ) but I thought I'd share.  I stopped using proactive a while back and my face full-on revolted! It was terrible, but after a while it got better, it was like my skin had to go through withdraw before it got better.  But now I use nutregena and my face is just dandy -- so if you didn't want to use it, after stopping for a while your face might clear up using something else.
  • I know with my previous 2 pg's, my acne disappeared and my skin glowed (yes, glowed!)  With all the pg hormones and pnv's you may be pleasantly surprised - that is, if you do decide to stop - it may be worth a try.

Of course, everyone is different!  Good luck!

This. My skin went crazy after stopping proative, and now is perfectly clear just using cetaphil. I don't think proactive is a good thing, ever.

  • I have been using Proactive for 4 years and I am 10 weeks pg.  I was concerned so I specifically asked my OB and he said it was fine.  There is no "fine print" on the bottles to warn against it.  If you're still nervous ask your doc.  I know there are mixed feelings about this.
  • My Doc said no.
