Anatomy Sono ~ Big Baby?

We had our anatomy sonogram two weeks ago (I was 19 weeks), and our baby boy weighed a little over 12oz then, measuring 21 weeks.  The doctor seemed pretty surprised by this ~ he actually laughed out loud when he looked over our results.

My husband was 10lbs when he was born, and Doc says our son is likely to follow in his father's footsteps.  Yeeowwwch!!!

Has anyone else had a baby weigh 12oz (or more) at 19 weeks?  And,  how much did they end up weighing at birth?

I'm hoping that he's just getting a head start, and maybe his weight~gain will slow down eventually...  I'm wanting to go natural for my first birth... but, we shall see : )

What did your baby weigh at your anatomy sono?

Re: Anatomy Sono ~ Big Baby?

  • Mine was estimated at 14 oz at 19w4d, and the u/s tech said that was right on track and completely normal. DH and I were both 7-lb babies.

  • My baby boy was 9 oz at 18w5d.

  • Interesting... the tech didn't comment, but my doctor did later when he reviewed the results.  Maybe he was just trying to scare a first~time mom? : )

He actually took us into his office afterward to discuss monitoring the baby's weight gain throughout the second half of my pregnancy.  He said he didn't think I could physically give birth to a 10 lb baby, based on my body build, and he wanted to take all necessary precautions.

Maybe I'm worrying for nothing?  Hmmm... 7lbs would be just fine with me! : )

  • My son is also measuring 2 weeks ahead.  I had my scan at 21 weeks and he weighed 1.2 pounds!  I'm with you worrying about how I'm going to get this kid out of me!
  • My LO was 11 oz at 19w0d and the doctor said everything is right on track.  DH and I were both in the 6lb range (me low 6s and he was high 6s).  GL!

  • This seems interesting, I have a 9 oz girl and a 10 oz. boy and doc said it was right on track and it was directly in line with any measure by week on-line websites.

Do you think there is any way that you could be a week or two further along than you expected?

  • Mine was at 18w6d but measuring 19 weeks at 10 oz.  They said it was perfect.

  • My LO was 14 oz at 19w5d.  I was a little alarmed when I read in all the pregnancy books that she's "supposed" to be around 10 oz., but neither the tech nor the doctor said anything about it.  I see my OB on Tuesday to review the results, so I plan on asking him about it then.  The only worry I had was that it might be a GD indicator.

  • We discussed that, and he said that the first ultrasound is usually the most accurate to predict due date if it is done early, and ours was at 8 weeks, measuring right on track back then.

But... anything is possible, I guess!

Let me know what your doctor says!  I'm pretty sure I'm just worrying for no good reason... as usual : )

  • They told us LO was about 13oz at 19w2d. (he measured 20w2d, though). No comments made on abnormal size. They just think he will arrive before his date.
Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)
  • My DS measured ahead my whole PG.  They estimated 9+ lbs early on and at the end.  He was so big they tested me early for GD.

He was 7lbs6oz when born at 38w5d.  He had a giant melon head and long skinny chicken legs (2 of the 3 things they use to estimate weight.)

I wouldn't let it worry you.  Nor would I let a doctor convince you that you can't deliver a baby your body grew.

     I love this!  Thanks : )

  • I was 20 wk 4 days at my ultrasound and the tech said our baby was 15 oz.  They didn't say anything about the due date changing or the size of our baby.  DH was a chunker and I was 2 weeks late so that made me a chubbier newborn. I was the skinniest baby once I started growing but DH had a pot belly, haha!  At birth, he was over 9 lbs. and I was a 7lb. 10 oz.  Who knows what size our little one will be, lol!

  • I had my scan at 19w5d and baby weighed 12 oz.  The ultrasound tech told us that she anticipates him being a big baby.  My husband and both of his siblings were both 9 lbs or more, so it would not surprise me.

  • Our little girl weighed 13oz at 19w5d, and although I thought that was a little big, the tech seemed to think it was fine. I have my next doc appt. tomorrow to review the results, so I'll see what she thinks. Neither DH or I were big babies, so who knows.

  • That does seem odd that he'd make such a fuss about it... our u/s this time was at 20 weeks, 2 days and baby was 11 oz but was only measuring in the 50%, so we aren't far off at all.

DS was the same way and he came 16 days early at 8 lbs 3 oz... praise God he was early!  He gained all that 'baby weight' towards the end of the pregnancy.

I'd say just don't panic and see what he does!
