Cloth Wipes - to make or to buy?

They seem so expensive to buy!  I've been using some circo wash cloths and I officially hate them.  Too small, don't wipe well.  I have some wash clothes, brand name "Especially for Baby" not sure where I got those from?  Anyone know?   They work better!!!  I'm thinking about making wipes with flannel and terry cloth.  I'm not crafty at all!  Are there different kinds of terry cloth at the fabric store, is one better then the other?  I was going to buy some terry cloth and some flannel and cut them out (8x8?) and then send them over to my MIL....her mom sews and has offered to sew them for me!  I'm hoping I like them though!  What material are your favorite cloth wipes?

Re: Cloth Wipes - to make or to buy?

  • I made mine with terry cloth/flannel and I really like them. They are super think though (like normal washclothes) this is both good and bad...

Especially for Baby is BRU brand (I'm 99% sure)

At my JoAnn's ther's only one kind of terry cloth, not confusing at all. If you ask someone they should even be able to show you were it is...

  • I made mine.  I cut up old flannel PJs from a thrift store (cutest prints ever) and paired them with matching cotton velour or soft cotton corduroy (also from a thrift store).  They are "turned and topstitched"  and about 8x8.  I have a few terry, but don't like them much.  I think I made about 100 of them (seriously).  They are FANTASTIC and much better than any that I've seen for sale except maybe the "sherpa" ones - only because I don't have that fabric and want to try them.

I prefer soft flannel on one side and velour on the other.  Great for gripping nasty poo and soft .

  • I hated the handmade ones I bought. I tried both fleece and cotton. But I love the cheap-o baby washclothes that I found. I found them at The Christmas Tree Shop - 25 for $3.50. They're perfect. I've also gotten four for a dollar from Dollar Tree and those are good too.
  • I can't sew, so I bought seconds on ETSY.  I love them, they are just flannel.  I do have a couple of wash clothes that I use for extra messy jobs, but the plain flannel have been good.  I got 2 dozen for $5.99 from handmadeburps on Etsy they just have stitching that's a little off, but work fine and they are a ton of super cute fabrics

  • Just use cheapy baby washcloths from the dollar store. Work great, cost very little. Keep it simple :)

  • I made mine. Flannel and Terry from JoAnn. I just zig-zagged around the edges and trimmed them. Some are smaller than others, but they work great. I did realize though, that it would've been cheaper to buy a large bath towel than the yard of terry. It was 6 dollars for the terry (not the best quality, but perfect for the wipes) and I could've gotten a big bath towel for three dollars at target and cut it up for the same number of wipes.

If you want to save money you could probably buy a towel and old flannel PJ's from goodwill or some other second-hand store for cheaper than raw fabric from a craft store. If you MIL is an able crafter, she should be able to use those to make plenty of wipes. I have 30-ish so I never run out in between washes.
