I need some advice...
The OB I see is one that I saw during rotations with my first pregnancy. I liked her attitude and I wasn't super crazy about the OB that I had originally, so I switched to her at about 32 weeks. She began my induction and everything was going well with my labor, but then she had to change shifts and another doctor ended up coming on who ultimately decided that I needed a c-section. Since then, the OB that I love has changed practices and is very hard to get in with. Like I said, she's not the one who gave me my c-section, but she's known around town as being a really good c-section doctor.
Anyway, long story short - I love her, but truthfully have only seen her a handful of times. Now that I am pregnant (and am scheduled for my first appt Nov 11), should I see a midwife instead? I would LOVE to have a vbac and want someone who is going to help me accomplish that. This doctor did tell me at my yearly that I would be a good candidate for a vbac, but I don't know... Isn't a midwife going to be more helpful to me in the long run? What do you girls think?
^ Does any of this make any sense?
Re: What would you do?
I don't know the reasons for your induction, but I know lots of very nice doctors that I would never let take care of me in pregnancy because of their tendency for interventions - inductions, CS, whatever.
I think FIRST you need to decide what you want for this pregnancy. Do you want to end up in a situation like last time? Do you want to know that the person you see will be the person who attends your birth? Do you have an opinion about interventions (some people don't)?
As far as VBACs go, I have a hard time with anyone who believes that a VBAC is any more risky than any other birth. You shouldn't be treated like you have a giant red flag stamped on your forehead.
I'm not certain about this but I'm pretty sure, you can see a midwife, but definitely need a dr in case you need a c/s. So a mixed practice might be a good choice for you.
I'd look at the hospitals c/s rates first and vbac rates and then select my favorite docs at those hospitals. First to Worst or something like that is the site that gives rate info.
I can't tell you what you should do, because I think it is a personal choice, but I will tell you that, I don't think I could see an OB for a "low risk" pregnancy. I feel safer with a midwife because they are trained in normal birth. OB's are surgeons and I dont want another surgical birth. I feel like they are generally more apt to intervene and I am not comfortable with that either.
With all that said, if you have a midwife who does not believe in VBAC vs an OB who truly does, I would think you are better off with the OB.
It's a hard choice to make, but remember that you are not locked into anyone. You are hiring them and you can change your mind at any point.
I haven't seen my doctor yet (first appt is on wednesday) but, what i like about him with my last child is that there is a midwife who works in the office with him. I saw her most of my last pregnancy and worked well with me and my doctor on my desire or a completely natural birth experience. I ended up being induced a week early because I had severe sciatica and ended up having to have a c/s becuase of the amount of pain i was in and failure to progress after 24 hrs.
Maybe there is a doctor in your area who also works with a midwife?
