20 + weight gain- please tell me i am not alone

So I hit 20 lbs today. I shouldn't be surprised because I gained almost 40 with DD, I guess part of me was hoping for a lower number this time around. I eat very healthy (w the occasional indulgence), I do the elliptical almost every day so I know its not for lack of control, this is just what my body does, I need to accept it and I know its all for the good of baby. But it just seems like such a big number with 16 weeks still to go (and those weeks include Thanksgiving and Christmas!). So who else is with me?? Any others of my side of 20? Oh I will say that I was able to lose it all plus 10 lbs after DD so I know its doable, I was just hoping with a lower number I could get back faster!

Re: 20 + weight gain- please tell me i am not alone

  • I'm at 24.  I was told by the Dr to expect 35 lbs so it seems on track to me.

  • I was up 25 at my appointment Monday. My OB wants me to gain 40 so she wasn't concerned.

  • My sister gained 50lbs with all 3 of hers no matter what she did. She is now tiny and you would never know she had 3 kids.

I didn't watch what I ate with DS and gained 40lbs by 36 weeks when I had him (so well on my way up to 50 I'm sure) and with DD I was more careful and still gained 34 lbs. I'm up over 20 now around 22 I think. I'm just not the 25 lber pregnant lady I guess. Expecting 35lbs again this time.

Exactly. Guess I am not either! I am ok with it, just a little leary since I can gain 5 lbs alone on Thanksgiving when not pregnant! Lol. You look wonderful btw, what a great looking family.
  • I've gained about 12 so far, and haven't really gained anything in the past two weeks. I'm nervous that I'm not gaining enough - we will always be worrying about something, I guess!

  • I've gained 21.  My OB said it's definitely on the high end but not too high and I shouldn't worry or change my eating or anything.  I was only 104 (at 5'0" so thin but not super skinny) to start, so I guess the baby just needed more!  But yeah, at this rate I'll easily be up 40 by the end... 40% of my pre-baby body weight, crazy!

  • I am almost at 25 weeks and gained 20 lbs. This is my first pregnancy.  My BMI pre-pregnancy is about 23.  Don't worry you are not the only one.  Seems like most of the people who post on this board gained 10 pounds or so around this time, but reality is, all the people I know (5 or so within the month or so of my due date) has gained just about as much as I did or a little more.

Don't worry, I feel the same everytime I step on that scale as well.

  • I'm at about 24 I think.  OB said I should gain about 45 (twins) and said I'm doing just fine.

  • I'm right there with you! I'm up about 26. I see no correlation between what I eat and how much I exercise and how much I have gained in any given week. I think my body is just holding onto whatever I give it. My mom has four sisters and all of them are the same - gaining around 40 pounds per baby, then losing it afterwards. I know I'll be back to my weight watchers (I was a lifetime member at my goal weight when I got pg, so I get three months free after baby) and I know how to do that (they have a special breastfeeding plan), so I'm not too worried. It is crazy to see such high numbers on the scale, though!

  • I'm at 25 weeks and have gained 25 pounds. My doctor told me to expect to gain 20 more pounds because I was pretty thin before baby. It still sucks watching the scale climb every day tho:/
  • ugh! I'm almost 25 weeks and have gained 22 pounds! I'm so glad I'm not the only one in that boat.

  • Nope, you're not alone. I'm up 20 lbs right now.

My weight gain started slow, but I think it's because of the extreme nausea I had up until 18 weeks. I was surprised to see that I've gained about 10lbs in the past month. I've been eating healthy, just larger amounts and more frequently. I've never seen such high numbers on a scale before, but as long as my little man's healthy, I'm sure I can lose it afterwards.

  • I'm in the same boat as you.  As of this morning, I'm up 21 lbs.  I have days that I wish I was one of the ladies who gained only 25 lbs the whole time and didn't show until 20 weeks, then I just remind myself that this is just what my body does when I'm pregnant.  I gain weight.  Not too much, but I gained almost 40 with DS and I'll probably be around 35 with this one.  If it gets me a healthy baby, then it's just fine with me :)

  • so far I've gained about 10 lbs but started out overweight.  My ob said that average is about 40 lbs for most women but for me I have to keep it under 20-25 lbs.  If you are worried I would ask your OB, if they are not concerned then I wouldn't be either.

Especially if you are eating healthy and working out. Are you eating enough?  Maybe your body is holding onto more because you are pregnant and working out.

  • ME!!!!  And I am totally okay with it.  I am feeding my baby, and yes, I indulge from time to time in some snacks that aren't necessary.  I can still wear all my pre-pregnancy clothes except that they don't fit around my waist, so I am trying to ignore people with negative comments.

  • I was 19 pounds at my 21 week appointment, so I'm on track for a 35-40 pound total gain according to my OB. He wasn't concerned about it.

  • 20 pounds up at 25 weeks; my doctor said to watch it but I think she forgot that she expected me to gain 40 since I was underweight (113, 5'4") to begin with.  I had no nausea or morning sickness during my pregnancy so the scale has always been going up since day one....but now I am trying to stay away from junk food and going back to my South Beach diet (whole grains, low sugar, good carbs) to get back on track.

  • I'm at 18 : ( I feel like a giant at this point, but oh well. It seems normal enough...we can't do anything about it anyway!

  • Seems like I am at the top with 34 pounds. I almost fainted at the dr office last time when I saw it but she said, good weight gain, without the blink of an eye, so I'm not worried. I gained 60 with my first DS and 45 with the second. For some women I don't think it matters what you do to keep it under control. I just try to think of it that he has lots of room in there is is nice and warm and cushioned, haha.

  • I'm there with you... not sure exactly where I started out, but I've gained 22 since my first OB appt at 9 weeks.  I'm not thrilled, but my doctor is not worried about it at all.
  • I have gained about 19lbs, all in the second trimester. I hope to slow the speed but my midwife is not concerned.

  • you are SO not alone.

You know those posts where the girls are saying that they have gained 7-12 lbs?   yeah, I don't respond because it pisses me off.

I am not a pretty or "cute" pregnant lady this time around...you on the other hand are DARLING!

It doesn't piss me off when they just say they've gained 7-12 pounds, but it totally pisses me off when they're like OMFG, I have gained SO much weight, I hope my doctor doesn't yell at me.

  • I've gained 20-25. I'm a little nervous since I still have four months to go and dr. recommended 30-35, but its going to be whatever its going to be. I could stand to eat healthier but I'm not doing too bad.

I figure as long as my diet is ok and I get some exercise, my body is going to do what it's going to do. Not everyone falls into line with some magical, universal weight gain chart. Assuming all women are the same and handle pregnancy weight gain the same is asinine.

  • Heck yeah I am!  at my 24 week check up I was up 22 pounds.  I willing to bet 10 of it is in my boobies.

  • Totes not alone. I was freaking out, the doc said to try not to worry, but I still do, of course :(.
