had a few interesting convos with some KU friends over baby books.
I was gifted about 498754357 books on parenting, feeding, eating, sleeping, shiiting as soon as I got KU. It's a nice gesture, but I didn't really read any of them. And now I'm selling most of them on Amazon to get them out of the house ![]()
So...IHO baby books:
What's on your "to-read" list?
What have you read and liked/not-liked?
Re: baby books poll (non clicky)
What's on your "to-read" list?
Currently reading Baby Wise (gifted to me), so far it seems like a lot of common sense, but I'm only 38 pages in...
Next up, Mothering Multiples (I think).
What have you read and liked/not-liked?
WTEWYE - this book kind of scared the crap out of me (esp. when I read the L&D part in first tri...) I like the weekly emails from babycenter.com better than the week-by-week in here too.
Dr. Luke's Book - IDK, I just thought it was kind of boring. The parts on when you could deliver vaginally were interesting and I liked charts on baby growth percentiles.
S&L Nursery Book - LOVED. Helped me pick what direction I wanted to go in with the nursery. I had this book long before I was pregnant (sadly).
Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy. I normally really like her, except when she's on Oprah. But this book annoyed me. I didn't think it was that honest either. I could've written a funnier chapter on CM issues than she did. IDK, some people love it, but for me it was just meh.
I only have a read a couple of books so far.
A view in the womb (pictures of each week/stage of development): I found really interesting and exciting to see what baby looks like now. However I borrowed it from the library and have already returned it. You can just as easily find this picture on the internet.
Pregnancy week by week (not sure of the actual name): I am enjoying reading this. It is neat to know what is going on with baby and with me. And if there are certain this I should or should not be doing each week.
Girlfriends guide to pregnancy: Read the whole book and hated it. It was very much one pregnant persons opinion of pregnancy. And I didn't agree with her opinions most of the time. However, maybe I will appreciate it more down the road as I get more pregnant.
My all time favourite is my day by day pregnancy journal. Each night I read what is going on with baby and mom for that day and write in how I am feeling, mood, energy level and cravings. I also add little notes in the margins about anything exciting that is happening. I think this will be a nice keepsake to look back on after baby is born and even for baby when they are older. Yesterday I read that baby is now pee'ing! No wonder I feel like crap I am a septic tank lol!
I've only had a couple books about pregnancy:
Your Pregnancy Week by Week (was sent to me by my insurance company of all places!): It was neat in the beginning to read what they said baby was doing and how big baby was. However I got sick of all the extra junk piled in that pretty much scared the bejezzus out of you. It was like talking to that Debbie Downer friend who tells you something really great (baby is now the size of a pear and doing backflips) and then kills the whole joyful moment (don't stare a the color orange for too long cause it could cause your baby to grow a third leg). I stopped reading it somewhere back in second tri.
WTEWYE (given to me by a friend): I flipped through this one and really only read a little of it. Kinda gave me the same feeling as above book. Although it was good for a great laugh, my fave section was part where they had "questions" about if drug use was ok while pg. I think I laughed so hard I almost peed myself.
Pregnancy Sucks! What to Do When Your Miracle Makes You Miserable: Loved this book!!! A friend at work loaned it too me when I was about 4 or 5 months, it's hysterical. The author gives you a month by month look at being pg with a healthy dose of humor. She not only talks about symptoms and what your going through, but also tells you about the bad stuff that can happen without making it absolutely terrifying! I definately recommend this one!
I also did the weekly emails from babycenter.com and the Bump. It was so much fun reading them with DH each week.
I bought Dr Luke's book (have only read parts of it - like you, Niki, I find it a bit boring) and the Mayo Guide to a Healthy Pg - good reference book.
Also took out from the library:
WTEWYE - blech
Your Pg Week by Week - I managed to keep this for 9 weeks and it was good but not "buy-worthy" so I got what I needed from it and am done with it.
Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins - I read this several weeks ago so of course remember almost nothing. I will probably buy it plus the singleton version as I've heard the twin version is a good companion to the singleton version (which has more info).
Twins! Pregnancy, Birth, and the First Year of Life - also just OK.
I might try to take out "Babywise" from the library next if they have it, then decide if it's worth buying or not.I elected not to read any of the witty/funny books early on and now that I am so miserable I can't see myself enjoying them at this point anyway!
I read Belly Laughs when I was pg before and thought it was "meh" too.
currently, i'm skipping through Your Pregnancy Week by Week and You: Having a Baby. I also have Raising Baby Green which I plan to start in a couple of weeks.
all of these books were purchased for me or borrowed. I've found them helpful, but not worth the money that I would have spent on them. I've found a lot of the same info online for free.
I'm looking forward to reading Happiest Baby on the Block and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.
oh, and I did buy Baby Bargains - that one was worth the money!
I did too, and ITA with you! It was worth the money. I got it for pennies too because I had a sick Borders coupon
