Cloth Diapering

Ok so I?m reading and I still don?t understand?

I took your advice and the in info on cd above. However I?m still lost (I?ve been told that I over process information to much). We are looking for the least expensive option, the covers don?t have to be super cute, I just want to keep my babies but dry.

So these are my questions and here goes. Based on the info that I?ve read what would be great for us are AIO with snaps.

If you are in the Atlanta Metro Area and would like to tutor me I would love it (or anyone I would love it) you can contact me at dawsonpatrice at yahoo dot com: I feel so overwhelmed!!!!!!!!!!!!

If am missing anything feel free to add?.. TIA

1.       So with the AIO, I?ve read that people use pre folds, can you use these as the inserts if no why? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gerber-Pre-folded-Birdseye-Cloth-Diaper-12-Pack-White/5824293

2.       How many diapers do I need for each phase for the baby (newborn 0-3mths, baby3-6mths, 6-9mths, 9-12mths)? About how many diapers will you need per day for each phase?

3.       This where I gave up and stop typing?

  •     So with the AIO, I?ve read that people use pre folds, can you use these as the inserts if no why? https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gerber-Pre-folded-Birdseye-Cloth-Diaper-12-Pack-White/5824293

AIO are all in ones.  They are all one piece diapers with the soakers/inserts are sewn inside with the outside being waterproof.  That's all you need. These are the more costly version of cloth diapering and take the longest to dry because they are the thickest.

Pre-folds are the "old school" cloth diapers. Those are ones that you need to use a waterproof cover with.  This is the most economical version. I would NOT use the gerbers.  They don't work (based on many comments around here.)  What you want  is Indian or Chinese prefolds. You would need to order these from Kellys Closet or Jillians Drawers or any of the many stores you'll see mentioned on the boards.

How many you need depends on how much laundry you want to do.  A newborn is probably going to be changed 12x in 24 hours.  If you get 24-30, you will only have to do laundry every other day.

  • Pocket diapers look like AIOs but you do stuff them with an insert.  They generally come with an appropriately sized insert (unless you buy used -sometimes an insert might be missing/lost).  You can add extra inserts for overnight time and naps.  Inserts are available at all the CD store websites so that you can build up your ideal absorbency for your baby's needs.  The great thing about pockets is that they are customizable for absorbency and they dry fast.  You take/shake the insert out to throw in pail and wash both pieces. You hang the empty cover to dry and toss the insert in the dryer.  Pocket dipes are usually more economical than AIOs depending on the brand.

  • check out the FAQ in my siggy.

I would look into Prefolds or fitted diapers. The fitteds need a cover as well but are shaped like a diaper and dont need folding.

I also would only buy diapers for the newborn stage up to maybe 3 months. After that you will know what you like/dont like.

Jillians drawers has a trail that you can try different diapers, I would look there too.

Its not that difficult once you sort through all the info. Take some time to absorb it.

  • you are correct i mean option#2  the prefolds w/ cover...thx.... (note to self you want covers and prefolds)
  • No, don't get the Gerber prefolds.  They are not very absorbent.  i second pp's suggestion of GMD pfs - they are more expensive but still only about $2 per diaper.  They work very well and are usable later on as burp cloths, diaper inserts, cleaning cloths, etc.

  • 1. With AIOs (all in ones), you don't need prefolds. The diaper has everything you need in one fell swoop. If you want to ditch the idea of AIOs for now and go with perfolds, do NOT use Gerbers. They're not very absorbent and will leave you frustrated with CDing.

    2. You'll need a good couple dozen diapers for any phase, if you want to wash about every other day. Plan to change every 2-3 hours (sometimes more).

If you're looking for the least expensive option, I'd get 2-3 dozen prefolds and a half dozen or so covers. Accessories would include a Snappi or 2, something to store the dirties (this can be as simple as a garbage can and a pillowcase as a liner), and a detergent that you know is safe for CDs. You might want to look at different sites to see if you can get used diapers, as that keeps the costs down. If you want to splurge a bit, you can incorporate some fitted diapers, like Kissaluvs or Thirsties Fab Fitteds.
