Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is your toddler getting any candy?

I'll admit DS has already had a kit-kat and some smarties last night when we went ToT at the mall thanks to my sister.  She thought I was being silly when I said DS shouldn't get any candy, and said one or two pieces is fine.  I've forgiven her, and DS survived.

  • Your poll has only "no Way" so I am responding.. and yes DS had candy for hte first time last night. He had a twizzler stick. I am sure I will give him a bit tonight too.

I fixed it, my computer posted way before I was ready.

  • I voted no although based on my own candy consumption, I clearly don't think it's the devil ;-)  I just don't think he needs it until he's older.
  • I voted No...but I dont think candy is the devil LOL He can have candy when he just a bit older and has some teeth LOL

  • It's good parenting to care for your child's teeth by eating their halloween candy....

DS has already eaten some halloween candy from his party at daycare. We've eaten more.  It's not a big deal for us.

  • I bought some really awesome Organic Fruit Lollipops that DS can have because he is allergic to all food additives. Yes, they have sugar, (no corn syrup) but I wanted him to be able to enjoy something on Halloween.

  • I voted SS because I would allow DD to have a piece or two, but she has absolutely no interest in it.  They went trick or treating at dc on Friday and she loved getting the candy, but just handed it to DH when she was done.  She also skipped over the cupcakes and cookies at the party and just nommed on the cheese that was there.  What a weirdie!  (DH and I did enjoy eating her candy though!)

  • I didn't mean you really thought candy was evil if you voted no way.
I was just being Halloween silly.  I guess that's a poll "fail" for me.

I don't think it's "the devil" but no, he's not going to have it.  He has NO idea what it is and I'm glad.  I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible. It's not even about it being "bad" or not nutritious. It's the whining. When he sees other kids eating it, he's not even interested. So, my feeling is why start that for no reason?
  • There have been two times when I let them split one of the Kit Kats I bought for our nonexistent trick or treaters. We went to two Fall/Halloween festival type things last night but they were too little for any of the games so they didn't get any candy. :(

  • We gave DD a sucker last night.  She sucked on it for a minute or two and then started playing with it so I took it away and she didn't care.

  • I voted SS. He'll probably get a lick or two of something (Smartie, lollipop) but I'm not letting him have whole pieces of anything. Most likely he won't get anything he can eat anyway, so he'll just have some cupcake that I'm making. :D

  • I just gave DS a saftey pop.  He ate it for about 5 minutes and loved it.  I took it away when he started biting chunks out.  I also gave him some nibbles of a reese's peanut butter cup.  I figure I'd give it to him now, and not after TOTing... he will be zonked.  I will probably give him a few more pieces this week, but I will eat most of his candy! (he's got to share with LO#2!! :o)

  • He has no idea what Halloween is.  I'll wait until he's actually interested to give him candy on Halloween.  I mean, at this point, wouldn't I be giving him candy more for my entertainment than his?

  • I voted yes, but DS doesn't like candy.  We will offer him some but I doubt he will eat any.  I bought some Halloween sugar cookies for him tonight.

  • I don't have a problem with him getting a few sweets, it's the fact that most candy is still a choking hazard for him at his age.  I'm worried that he doesn't have enough teeth to chew it enough.  But if he were to get something that I thought was safe, I'll probably let him.  I think a lollipop with supervision, is probably okay.  We're probably not going to trick or treating other than the houses in our cul-de-sac, which we are all friends with.

No, it's totally clear it's all in fun.  Of course you don't mean candy is the pure evil.

Gianna had a couple bites of a kitkat.  that's probably it.  Though I do want to test out a reeces peanutbutter cup. She's iffy on PB generally, but I have a feeling she might like a pb cup.  We don't give her chocolate or candy.  Those two things I mentioned will be it.

  • I would if DS would eat any, but he's not into chocolate and the other candy we have is too hard/chewy (choking hazard).

  • He might have one bite but he doesnt really like chocolate. Plus Im not sure of alot of candy that is not a choking hazzard? Well see, Im sure he will have a bite of something but thats it.

  • I'll probably allow her to have something... at least a taste.

  • Of course - she won't visit as many houses as her older sister, but she will get some candy and I'll let her eat whatever is not a choking hazard.  It's Halloween!
  • Nope.  He'll have some goldfish crackers.  Those are his favorite anyway.
  • He's not getting any candy.  I don't see the point this year.  He did however get a halloween cookie from his Grandma.

  • I'm sure I would have answered differently 6-8 months ago, but now, I'm sure we'll let DD have a piece or 2.

  • Unfortunately, I can't keep it from him if his brother is eating it, and at three my oldest is big enough to understand the logistics of TOTing. So, yes, they'll get to eat their candy, but I let them pick one treat for dessert every night until it's gone or they forget about it. Nobody gets to gorge.
  • i voted SS because J is allergic to milk, eggs, nuts and some seeds so he really "can't" have any, but if he were a normal child I would let him have something as a treat.

  • nah, i dont see any reason to offer it until they ask.  right now, they still like their veggies and consider fruit a dessert - if they know something better exists, they may rebel!

plus, i am a candy hog.

  • I don't think candy is the devil but he doesn't need any at this age IMO.
  • I wasn't planning on it but DD saw me open an almond joy and she came over and asked for some. So I gave her a couple small bites off of it. She loved it which makes me wonder if she gets candy at daycare...... lol

  • Of course I gave him some candy!  It's Halloween!  Not enough to make him sick, but he did have a fun size Kit Kat and a small pack of M&Ms today.  Yesterday he ate two fun size Three Musketeers.  He did not get hyper and the world did not implode.  As long as it's not a choking hazard, I don't see an issue at all with giving LO some junk food on Halloween.

  • C had several pieces - a mini twix, a bite of kitkat, and he sucked on a sucker for a while -  and enjoyed them. It's Halloween!
