P90 vs p90x vs 30 day shred vs running?

Which do you think is most effective and easiest to follow? I did the 30 day shred for 15 days, but didn't see any results. I began running ( 1 mile every day...im not very athletic) to get in cardio, but don't know how it will produce results. The problem I have is the lack of time to work out.... Same with all moms. I get up at 5am (LO gets up this time as well) so I work out after 9pm when he is in bed. I can't stay up for an hour every night to work out either because I need preparation done for work ( I'm a teacher). But I am desperate to make a change to improve my appearance and lose weight. Which do you think will be most effective and I can do at night?

  • The one thing I've heard about P90 and P90X from instructors in those programs is that they are for people who are already doing advanced exercise programs and not set up for novices.  If you are not physically ready for the program, the risk for injury is much higher.  As far as running, I love the Couch to 5K that has you running 3 miles by the end of the 9 wk program.  Also, what level did you do on the 30DS??

  • I did level one a couple days and the remainder were level two. I think I got discouraged with it before I got to level three.

I've known several people who have been really happy with the 30DS, it's just a matter of keeping with it.  Lots of ladies on her have had success with it too.  One thing I've heard them say is that the inches fall off before the pounds do so don't completely judge it on the scale.

  • I haven't been keeping track of inches at all... Mostly bc I am amazed how much wider I feel after having LO. But that is something that I will do and then try the 30 day shred again to see if it will make a difference. I usually focus on the numbers on the scale to see how effective a work out is, but I will focus on inches instead. Thanks!

  • My BFF and I were doing P90 in the spring before I got my bfp.  It is intense, but you don't have to do it at their pace, as long as you do it consistently.  I lost 10 lbs in the first 6 weeks we did it, and continued to lose another 15 lbs in my first trimester from the after effects of working out.  My friend continued the program without me, and she went from a size 4 at the beginning to a 0 at the end of the 90 days. I think if she would have had more to lose, she would have. She tried P90X when she was done with the 90 days of P90, but had a harder time sticking to it because it's almost twice as long and she's a student with a toddler.  I do recommend you focus on inches more than weight. My friend lost a total of 5-10 lbs, but 2 dress sizes.  I plan on going back to doing P90 as soon as I get the ok from my dr once LO is born.

  • I did 30DS for 36 days and definitely saw results.  I did 12 days on each level.  My weight loss was minimal, but I noticed clothes fitting better and saw muscle definition in my abs, arms and thighs.

  • I've done the complete P90X and 30DS programs.  I definitely saw better results with P90X, but that program requires much more of a time commitment then 30DS.  If it's hard to find time in your day, 30DS is probably something that you'd be able to stick with, so it would end up being more effective.  Another great program that I haven't tried, but have heard great things about is Insanity.  Apparently you don't need as much equipment as the others because most if not all of the exercises are done using your own weight as resistance.  Also, I've heard each of these videos is between 30 and 40 minutes.  I watched the infomercial and was about to pull the trigger and buy the system for something new to try, but then got my BFP so I'm just continuing with the usual workouts for now.  Good luck finding something that works for you. :)

  • I only have experience with the Power 90 and I think you would be fine just starting out and not get discouranged. It is a beginer program that only lasts 30 mins, you go at your pace and can easily pick it up or slow it down. I did it the first half of my pregnancy and just listened to my body, although I have not done any exercise for the last 3 months now!

Before getting pregnant I ran 5x a week and usually would run 1 marathon a year in the fall. Running will get you in good cardio shape but I never really loose weight running. I think you could easily mix running into the P90 program. I suggest do whatever you can fit into your schedule and actually enjoy, if you enjoy it you won't want to stop.

Good Luck! I'm so excited to get back into an exercise routine after this pregnancy.

  • I did P90X and really liked it,, didn't get my eating in control so didn't do much,, that's my issue. Have Insanity and will do it after delivery.. working on spin class, swim and weights,, have a sprint tri at the end of November, then a relay tri in Dec,, and plan to do a full marathon (most likely walk.jog) in Feb '11... so,, need the movitation to be consistent again with exercising.. will be more on Wednesday,, have overnight shifts the next few days.. I am doing this for myself, my DH and baby.
  • First, no matter what exercise you choose I'd try not to get frustrated if you don't see results quickly. And to me 15 days is very quickly. Getting in shape/losing weight is not something were we should be looking for immediate results or you are just setting yourself up for frustration and/or failure.

That said, my favorite exercise is running. I've been a runner for a long time, but really got back into it last April. And by combining that with being more aware of what and how much I eat I've been able to lose 20lbs. I think the reason I like running is you don't need much gear, and you can walk out your front door to go for a run. Plus when the kids were little I'd take them in the jogging stroller (now I go early before DH has to work).

     Whatever you choose good luck!

  • I wanted to add that I've often heard it said that losing weight is 90% diet and 10% exercise. So if you don't have time for a strict exercise regimen maybe start by looking at ways to improve your diet? I used sparkpeople to track what I was eating and loved it, but I know many others prefer dailyplate.
