Usually they start to show up in the 3rd tri. And like the PP said there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. You get them because your skin is stretching faster than your body can keep up. I had a friend who totally believed that using the special lotions would prevent her from getting them. Then she got pregnant. She used the lotions all the time, but still got lots of stretch marks. Use them if you want, but if it's going to happen then it's going to happen....

I didn't get one stretch mark with DD and I gained 40 lbs. I do have a few old stretch marks from puberty so I fully expected to see them pop up during pregnancy. I think I just lucked out, but I did use Bio Oil starting in the 1st tri.
Nothing can prevent them. You get them or not. Lotion/creams/oils are good for the itch that comes later though.
I saw a blog of an itty bitty mom carrying quads once. Not a stretch mark on her at 34 weeks (right before she delivered). Never got one. Then there are the unfortunate women who get them AFTER the birth. That is a kick in the pants if I ever saw one.
I never got them with DD. I am very small and gained nearly 40lbs. I did use lotion, but mostly because my belly was itchy.
My SIL kept telling me that stretch marks can come after the birth. I asked my doctor about it after DD was born and he said they are either there or they are not. They don't come after birth.
I gained 63 pounds with my first not a single stretch mark till 2 days before she was born she dropped like a sack of potatoes over night and I looked like a spider had made a frekin web around my gut! I think it just depends on your skin and stretchyness if that makes sense!

Really? I've read and heard from many mothers that coco butter works great.
They are wrong. There is no way to prevent them, as everyone in this post has said. Either you will get them or you won't. If coco butter worked, nobody would ever have stretch marks.
Bio Oil is an oil you get at a pharmacy or Walmart.
I got my stretch marks about two weeks after DS was born
If your mom or dad is prone to stretch marks, chances are you'll get them too. If there was something on the market to prevent them, that person would be a billionaire.
With my DS I used shea butter and vitamin E oil on my belly and boobs everytime I took a shower. I never did get any stretch marks on my belly but my boobs were a different story. I'm pretty sure that they were unpreventable since I went from a B cup to a DD in two months. I think that it did help and I've already started the regimen again with this pregnancy!
