s/o PIP's - how many gals got to hold/keep their LO's

with them after the c/s?  Just curious how common it is.  DS was whisked away after a brief showing and I plan on avoiding that at all costs again (even if I do end up with a c/s).  If you did get to spend one-on-one time with your LO either in the OR or recovery room, was it something you specifically mentioned in your birth plan, or was it something that your hospital did normally?

Thanks!

(and I have and will talk to my doctor about it for this time - she says it will depend on the OB who ends up doing the c/s if that's how it goes, but that it does happen at our hosp.  Fortunately, assuming my pedi is there, she'll also be supportive of it provided all is well with baby.)

  • Not me since i had general! The babies were fine i just couldn't do the spinal. So everyone else got hold and see my babies before me. The twins were probably 1.5 hours old when I saw them. brady was about 4 hours old before i saw him!

  • I'm not sure if they would have let me or not. They were concerned that they may have broken my daughter's arm so she was whisked away for Xrays once she started breathing properly.

  • Our hospital, despite having a high c-section rate, emphasized the importance of as to close to immediate skin to skin contact as possible and the opportunity to nuse. They also pressed two hours of alone time with the baby in/after recovery. However, DH did get to hold her first and brought her from the exam area to me.

  • I was given DS as soon as I was stitched up and they were ready to wheel me to recovery.  Up until that point DH held him.  They also had me attempt to breastfeed right in the recovery room.  This is something that my hospital does normally.

  • Hi, After my CS w/ DS, he was in my arms w/in 10 minutes which was just long enough for him to get weighed/swaddled,shots/eye medicine etc.. Then after they were finished w/ me, they took him to the nursery.  I went to recovery and w/in 10 minutes again, he was there for me to hold and nurse.  He was born at 809am and either just before or just after 9am I was nursing him... However they took him to the nursery after that to transport me to my room and then brought him again w/in 20 minutes of us being settled in our room..  I think it all depends on how the baby is doing and what the baby needs done.

Some CSXN babies require more intense suctioning and therefore may be wisked away.. When a baby is born vaginally, it gets a lot of the mucous squeezed out of it when it passes the birth canal.. When you have a csxn-they can be more mucousy/congested and require deeper suctioning..

     Good Luck!

  • They brought her to me right away, for about 10 minutes. Then DH and her went to the nursery. I didn't see her again for about an hour or so. We don't have "recovery", they just take you to your post partum room at that point, with the nurse who stays with you.

  • They cleaned him up pretty quickly and my DH got to hold him for a while until I was ready to go in to recovery. Then I was able to hold him, only that didn't go so well- I was really drugged up and apparently the epi had washed up into my arms so I didn't have a whole lot of feeling. DH just propped DS up in my arm. I don't really remember much of anything after that- except that the stupid nurse was eating a freaking sandwich and I was starving! I hadn't eaten anything in over 24 hours at that point.

  • After they cleaned her up and checked her out they swaddled her and gave her to DH to bring to me. So maybe 5 mins after she was born we had her. DH held her by my head while they stitched me up and once they transferred me to my recovery bed to be wheeled out of the OR they gave her to me. I held her and breastfed her the entire time I was in recovery (2 ish hours). She was taken for her bath, etc after that. I think it was hospital policy and I was very happy the way it all went. Well, still disappointed about the section but I think it went well otherwise.
  • Once they weighed her, etc., they gave her to my husband while finishing up on me.  I held her as they wheeled me down the hall back to my room (which frankly  made me a little nervous) and they had me BF as soon as we got back to the room.  I think all of it was standard practice there.  I held her until I started feeling nauseous and was afraid I would drop her so I told my husband to take her.  My sense of time is off so I'm not sure how long we had her there in the room before they took her to bathe her, etc., while they moved me to a different room.  My guess 1-2 hours with us before doing that?
  • I couldn't hold Hannah but they held her over me next to my head for pictures. I don't know how long it was until I got to hold her (shaking/puking/in and out can't remember much), but they gave her to me in recovery to try and breastfeed. I did get to hold her there.

This is the first pic where DS and I are both in it....this is right before I held him for the first time. As you can see, I was in recovery. His radiant warmer was about a foot or two to the right of DH, and I remember opening my eyes for the first time (they gave me valium) and seeing DH videoing the first bath - so I went back to sleep!

The only time he was taken out of recovery was when he went for blood work in the nursery, but they brought him back to me to nurse when his blood sugar was low. I was still in recovery when that happened. I couldn't hold him myself because I was so tired, but the nurse held him to me while he (crappily) latched.

  • I did.  I never went to recovery; they just handed DS to me and wheeled us back to our room.

ETA: DH got to hold him first... while they stitched me up and stuff.  I think this was all normal hospital procedure.

this was the case for both my c/s as well. DH was able to hold the baby as soon as he was cleaned up. DH then sat at my head with the baby. I was given the baby to hold as I was wheeled out of recovery. I nursed in recovery. The only difference between the two c/s was that I requested DH not be sent to recovery before me. I knew I would get go hold DS2 as I was leaving the OR and I didn't want DH go miss seeing me hold the baby for the first time like he did with DS1.
  • My DD was born at 36 weeks. Fortunately she was breathing great but had a little trouble regulating her temp, had some blood sugar issues, and since I was early (and it was 3 am) they didn't have the results of my strep b test. I did not hold her for 7 hours - but I'm ok with it because my nurses kept in constant contact with me and were trying to keep her out of the nicu if possible. According to hospital policy without the strep b results she should have been put in the nicu automatically but since I had had the test they stalled for a few hours, until they got the results (i was negative and my doc actually called one of his staff and they went to the office early to fax the results - one of the many reasons I love my ob). In the OR, my dh brought her to me after they did the suctioning, weighing, wrapping, etc. Then he went with her to the nursery while I recovered. Later he told me that he was so unsure what to do...follow her or stay with me. I made the decision for him - when they took her from him to be more thoroughly checked I told him to stay with her no matter what...I didn't want her to be "alone." Honestly that was part of the reason I was ok with her not being with me. I knew he was there so she had one of us. After she was stabilized she came to my room and was with me the whole rest of the time. Eta: normally for a full term healthy baby hospital policy is: she would have stayed with me and dh for my recovery hour, for skin to skin and breastfeeding. While I got moved to a room she would have had a bath and been brought right back to me.

  • After DD was cleaned up, DH got to hold her and bring her over for me to see and get pictures. She was given to me once I was stiched up and ready to head to recovery. We were wheeled over with her in my arms and I got to BF as soon as we got to recovery. I didn't mention anything, so I assume this is just how my hospital does it.

  • I didn't get to hold DD until she was over 2 hrs old Crying I went into labor naturally, progressed fine, and at 4 cm dilated, they checked me and found that she was unexpectedly breech. They gave me medication to stop my contractions, but it didn't work, so they gave me a second dose, which also didn't work. I was still contracting when they wheeled me into the OR. Apparently I didn't react well to the medication (or at least the double dose of it) because I had all sorts of problems post-op. My body temp was really low, and I was shaking so hard that I bit almost through my tongue. They had to put me in this thing that's like a huge sleeping bag that zips around your neck, and they blow warm air over your body to warm you up. Once I stopped shaking, they hooked me up to some extra medications (also due to the contraction-stopper, I was so out of it at this point though that I don't remember the specifics). They finally wheeled me up to recovery between 2-3 hours after delivery and I finally was able to hold her. DH stayed with her for most of the time.

  • From what I can remember (everything was super rushed), DS was taken into a seperate room to be weighed, cleaned and checked by a NICU doctor and then was brought out for me to see. He was placed on my chest in such an odd angle that I could hardly see him. I actually got a better look at him from the pictures that DH took. After I was all stitched back up, I met up with DH and DS in the recovery room, where I was able to nurse him as soon as I stopped shaking from all the drugs running through my system. I have no recollection of timing, so it could have been 20 mins after he was born to an hour before I got to hold him.

  • They did take DS away after showing me just to clean and warm him up.  Then they let me hold him on my chest when they wheeled me back to recovery.

  • If not for my epidural not taking effect, I would have been allowed to keep her with me during closing up and recovery (her apgars were 8 and 9).  However, I was in such an unimaginable amount of pain from feeling the c/s.  So I requested to be knocked out as soon as DH had her out of the OR.

I've been assured that I will not have issues with pain meds if a c/s is warranted this time (I'm at a different hospital with midwives this time).

  • DH held DS while they stitched me up, so I got to see him then. They also brought him with me into the recovery room where I was able to nurse him for the 1st time. He stayed in there for a little bit, then had to go to the NICU for monitoring. (I had GD and it's standard procedure at my hospital for that)

I did not specifically request it this way, but my hospital is BIG on BF and rooming in, and try to keep you together as much as possible!

In fact- this is how we were wheeled out of the OR- they didn't have a bassinet for DS! LOL!

  • I did, they wheeled me from the OR to recovery with DD in my arms.  Granted DH and the nurse plus my Mom and my doula were all right there in case I couldn't hold her but I felt super comfortable holding her.  And before that DH held her - so with the exception of the immediate post birth suctioning, weighing, apgar tests it was all DH or me.  I really feel like my c/s experience was super awesome.  But I am so looking forward to a VBAC.

  • I ended up w/an emergency c/s b/c his heart rate dropped after being on the pit for a couple hours. I had been in prodromal labor for weeks so I think he was just getting tired and wanted out!! It took them and hour and a half to put me back together because I had a boggy uterus and I bled like crazy. When they were toying around with my innards I got an air bubble up under my sternum that hurt like an S.O.B. to they gave me some Ketamine (sp?). They showed him to me right when he was born, and as soon as I was wheeled out of the OR and awake enough they brought him to me to nurse. If I hadn't taken that long in the OR it would've been sooner.

  • I held DD briefly after they did deep suction due to possible meconium aspiration.  The only time we were separated was when they were stitching me back up.  DH was with DD the entire time they were doing the Apgar and washing her off, etc.  It was about 45 minutes to stitch me up and then they brought DD to me in the recovery room to nurse.  I was very fortunate that my midwife stayed to attend the c/s and advocate for nursing ASAP.  I know I was lucky in that sense but it still breaks my heart to watch videos DH took of DD during that time and she was very obviously rooting for me.

  • I got to hold DD for a minute after they suctioned her.  I had DH stay with her while they cleaned me out and stiched me up.  I was in recovery for about 1/2 an hour before they brought her to me.  DH was with her the whole time and I just kept asking for them.  It was probably a little over an hour but it was the longest hour of my life!

  • They literally pulled DD out, wrapped her in a towel and gave her to DH to hold. Then DH gave her to me for a few minutes while they stitched me up. They then asked DH to take her over to the side of the room while they weighed her and did a few other things. He held her the whole time and carried her to recovery. She never left us and DH gave her to me to nurse as soon as we were in recovery.

I actually had a great c/s experience but would still love to have a VBAC next time around.

  • Not me :/  There was meuconium plus he was already in distress so the NICU team there and took him right away.  I saw his face for a few moments before he left the room.

DH went with him and I stayed in the OR with my mother while they searched for a missing surgical needle that was unaccounted for...  after prepping radiology to search for it, some random nurse walked in and found it on the floor.  Disaster averted and I was reunited with my DS an hour after he was born but couldn't hold him more than a few mins at a time cause he needed the warmers to keep his temp up.  It seemed like forever.

  • DS was never taken away from DH and I. If I have to transfer for a non-emergency I will use the same hospital for that reason alone.
