Speaking of my dorky chicken hobby...

My kids have been begging for silkie chicken lately and I think they're soon going to each get their own chick that will grow into one of these (not sure what color yet though):

And I'm going to add a couple of these to the flock for myself:

Aren't they absolutely crazy, LOL?

  • Cleo, you could totally be BFFs with one of my co-workers.  She reminds me so much of how I imagine you would be from your posts.  She's got chickens too.

I told her she needs to get the fancy chickens so I can come play with them.

I don't know which one of those pictures is the cutest.  LOL

  • Ha- I don't have any of the fancy ones now. I wanted to start off with your basic laying hens- sturdy, hardy and proven. I was afraid they'd all end up dead and didn't want to be responsible for killing off fancy chickens, LOL.

Now that I'm fairly confident that I know how to take care of them and they're not dying on me I'm ready to move on up to some fancy chickens. A friend's mom is a chicken breeder who sells her fancy birds for $300+ each (CRAZY, isn't it?!?) and she's offered to just give a couple to the kids. Apparently she goes to poultry shows and wins top place all the time. The whole chicken show circuit is a bit too nuts for me and I have no interest in showing birds, but a few funny looking ones to run around the backyard would be amusing just on a personal entertainment level.

  • That top chicken is the cutest thing I have ever seen. Now I want one.
  • We saw chickens like the top one in Erie, PA! They were SOoooooo cute.
  • I was hoping to raise some of those if we move into a more rural area..

I can't wait to ask you for chicken tips!!

(we'll just raise them for the eggs- we don't do meat, and even if we did, I can't even kill spiders without immense guilt...)

there's a house near my parent's that has a few of these...I love them!!

  • BoF: I do eat meat, but there's no way I could ever eat our chickens! They are totally pets and all have names. I can't imagine biting into a chicken leg and thinking, "Mmmm, Mathilde sure is good eatin'!"
  • those are hilariously cute!

My parents have 10 chickens (for eggs only!)  and my kids are IN LOVE with them.  I think they're a little stinky...but kinda funny and cute.  :)

  • Do any of yours lay colored eggs?  We had one that was supposed to lay green eggs but it never laid any eggs and it was CRAZY!!!  We had to trade it for a different one because I was scared to have it around the kids.  I was really excited to have colored eggs though.

  • I am sure that you are aware of how jealous I am that you have chickens.

DH seems to be wearing down. He's leaving the dog cages in our shed 'just in case'.
