Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Does this seem right- baby's weight

At DS's 6 month appointment he weighed 20 pounds. Today I took him to urgent care for an ear infection and he weighed 19 pounds. He's only been mobile for about a month.

Does that sound right? I'm hoping they weighed him wrong!

Re: Does this seem right- baby's weight

  • I would say its possible. Each scale is slightly different. Also was your baby weighed in the same condition (ie no diaper, dry diaper, etc). I would not worry about it.

This.  I wouldn't stress.  It is possible, and the scales could be different as well.

all of that, and also around nine months is when Jack started moving, grabbing the scale, etc which messed with the weighing.

Have you had your nine month appt yet?   you can bring it up then.

Thanks. His 9 month is next Friday. I knew his weight would slow down as he started crawling (which was about a month ago). He was weighed the same as at his pedi's office.

  • Completely normal and it happened to me.

I took DS to a GI specialist because he's still having issues with reflux. It was about 2 weeks after his 9m appointment, and he was a pound less than he was at 9m according to the GI specialist scare.  I had to go back to my pedi for a 2nd flu shot 2 weeks later and told her what had happened. She said it was probably just a difference in scales. When she weighed him on her scale again, he had gained weight from his last appointment there and mentioned a difference between scale to scale was completely normal.

  • DD has had several weight issues in her 9 months. In our experience, there have always been other "signs" that will warn us when she is losing weight/not gaining. (Not eating, uncomfortable, etc) I think that if there were an issue, he would have other symptoms or be acting differently.

Also, the scales are terrible. At our ped, scales are known to be terribly off - like an entire pound off. Just like PP said, kids pull on them, play with them, etc. We always zero out the scales before DD gets weighed and make sure that it balances out before she gets weighed. If it seems "off", we ask to be weighed on another scale for confirmation. (Overboard, I know, but DD has serious weight & health issues). I'm pretty sure you just got a bad scale! Good luck!

  • I concur, scales vary a lot.  When we took Ophelia to the ER a while back I had had her at a check-up with the pedi.  Her weight was different at the two locations.
