1st Trimester

1st prenatal appt. at less then 6 wks....

I scheduled this appointment back in September, hoping I'd be pregnant by the time it came around (at the time I scheduled to have an annual). I called last week to switch the appointment over from an annual to a prenatal visit and shortly after realized that I will be just a few days shy of six weeks pregnant. I called back thinking I should reschedule but they couldn't get me in for another two weeks and I don't want to wait that long...

Will it make a big difference if I am just shy of 6 weeks?

  • There probably won't be too much to see. My first appointment I was 5w6d and didn't see anything but a sack. My next was 7w6d and we saw the heartbeat...

  • Is it standard to have a vaginal ultrasound at your 1st appointment? I did this all two years ago and you'd think I'd remember but I'm drawing a total blank.

  • I have my first appointment this coming Tuesday and I'll be 5w4d. My doctor told me it would mainly be a "consult" to get my medical history, answer any questions I have and to have blood work done. They probably won't be doing an u/s but I'm glad that I'm still going in just so I can get some face time with my doctor.

Even though it is earlier in the pregnancy and they may want you back again in a few weeks, I'd still go.

  • When I found out I was pregnant, I called my doctor to schedule the appointment and they informed me that they usually wait until 8-10 weeks so I am not scheduled until 3 weeks from now.  At this stage they said they would get family medical history and take some blood work and do an ultra sound
  • @ 4wks pregnant I called my doc and she had me come in right away (my family members has tons of complications with their pregnancies) anyway she did a vaginal ultrasound right way and couldn't see anything...not even a sack.  I went back in this week and I was 7w1d and they saw the sack and got a heart beat. So to answer your question I don't know if having an ultrasound on the first visit is normal but don't be too shocked if they can't see anything that early

  • The exact same thing happened to me.  I scheduled my apt in September for my annual hoping I would be pregnant by then, and I was!  But, I was 5 weeks exactly to the day and they only freaked me out by taking pictures of my falopian tubes (apparently where my hormones were still feeding my sac) and two spots they thought could be potential babies... Yes, plural!  Now we don't know for sure, but we are all geaked out that we might be having twins!  The bad news is I was supposed to have another u/s this coming Tuesday but had to cancel... I wish I could find out for sure!  I would wait because then you will know for sure... I wish I did since I don't have any reasurrance whatsoever!
