Cloth Diapering

BG questions

I just bought the BumGenius One size and have 2 questions:

1) The store where I bought them says do not wash with any type of additive free detergent. Is it true? Any other rec's? I remember something about making your own with vinegar...?

2)  Do you ever re-use the same shell with a clean insert if it's just pee?

TIA!

Re: BG questions

  • I'm not sure about #1, I use Rockin' Green detergent.

No, I don't re-use shells, wash every time because the shell lining is against their skin so gets dirty every time.

  • I wash mine in Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin and they've been fine.
  • 1) yes, that's true, i wouldn't use other detergents if i were you.  i got the seventh generation delicate care detergent, no additive (enzymes, brighteners, etc).  i've heard people RAVE about rockin green detergent.

    2) no, i never re-use the same shell with a clean insert.  the liner is up against their skin so it ALWAYS gets pee on it... and I wouldn't want to stuff a diaper with an insert that had already been soaked in pee, I'd haev pee all up my arms if I did that :)

I remember being confused by this at first too. If you're looking for a system where you can reuse the shell, you need to look at an AI2 system like GroVia or Best Bottoms.

  • I also use Rockin Green, so I'm not sure about any other detergent.

You have to wash the shell every time you use it.

  • You can use Tide original powder.  I believe its the cheapest option plus the easiest to find in stores.

No, you don't use the shell more then once.

  • BG has a specific list of detergents that they recommend and ones that they don't. This can affect your warranty on the diapers.

I use Purex Free and Clear and it was on the list and pretty inexpensive. I usually get it at Target.

  • Also they tell you no vinegar at all.
