Not Sure How DH Survived Childhood

His mother seems to have NO clue.  Never fails she always buys stuff way older than DS.  Today she was over for a few and she brought him Halloween Treats...a very large lolli, 2 BLOWPOPS, and these GUMMY letters that are about as thick at gummy worms and about 2 inches high.  She had no clue that DS could not eat the latter two things.

When he was an infant she was watching him.  He did not eat for 5 hours because "well, he pushed at the bottle so I thought he did not want any"...he had drank one ounce

Re: Not Sure How DH Survived Childhood

  • Do we have the same MIL??? ;)

Mine also puts diapers on backwards, lets the bottle drop so low that nothing is coming out (without ever noticing.....) and can't buckle the carseat correctly.

BUT.....my favorite story of all time: My FIL took all 3 boys (DH is one of 3 boys....) fishing one day. About an hour later, he comes back home with the youngest, who had cut his finger very deeply with a hook. My MIL looks at him and says, "where are the other 2?" He says: I LEFT THEM ON THE DOCK! The other 2 (DH and his older brother....) were 7 and 4 at the time. YIKES! Luckily, they didn't drown ;)

I could go on and on with stories. I have NO idea how they all survived. Even DH makes comments that he doesn't know how his parents did it.....

  • My ILs have no recollection of Adam before he was about 5 years old.  Except that he woke at 2am and 5am every night until he was 18 months old.  I have often told them that I would have set myself on fire if Jacob was still waking 2x a night at 18 months.  Otherwise, they think that they gave birth to a 5 year old.  And suggest to us parenting techniques that would be appropriate for a 5 year old - let him fall asleep in front of the couch (so you don't have to fight bedtime), allow for a more flexible bedtime, and - my fave - does he speak in sentences yet?  No, well then you should sit him in front of old war movies so that he'll pick up more language.  No joke...war movies.

How on earth did my husband turn out so normal?

  • I could have written the same thing!

However, my DH does have an EXTREMELY high pain tolerance (ex: cut off part of his finger and did not take pain meds) - I always wondered why he had such toughness.  After I saw MIL with my babies and how irresponsible she is with them I knew why he was so tough - he HAD to be to survive her!!!

ETA: by irresponsible I don't mean crack-mama/neglectful.  Just clueless and not aware of things - ex: when DS started to slip in tub last week - instead of grabbing him (her hands were already on him) - she pulled her hands away and he fell. ugh.

  • My ILs love to tell the story of my DH climbing out the window and going next door to his grandmother's house.

    He was 3.

The grandmother had to call them and tell them where he was.  They hadn't missed him.

    Indifferent

  • When dh was little, he fell off of the bleachers at a baseball game and split his chin. His mom and grandparents told himto rub some dirt on it and to keep playing. He has a huge scar and I'm sure he needed stitches! We also have a picture of him playing on the roof! Who in their right mind let's a 7 year old play on the roof?!?! I'm surprised he's halfway normal! ;)

  • Haha.  My MIL is awesome....she always does what I ask and I trust her fully with my girls. I can't imagine having a MIL like that it would DRIVE.ME.NUTS!  Maybe before all holidays you should make a clear list of what he can and can't eat for his age and age appropriate toys hahahaha!

Not only was he playing on the roof, but someone actually photographed it?  Indifferent

I trust my MIL completely when it comes to caring for Henry, but we have this issue with both her and my own mom.

I guess their memories of our childhoods are really jumbled, because they expect H to do things or hit milestones that are just not reasonable for his age. They are constantly saying things like, "You did so-and-so at his age..." which I know cannot possibly be true. They are remembering a different age and just don't realize it. I think it must be a common problem.

  • My MIL is like this, but only when it comes to toys.  She buys toys that are totally inappropriate for Ava's age.  She sent a ZuZu pet for Easter (when Ava was 16 months old) -- that thing could rip her hair out if she put it near her head!  She also recently sent a collection of very, VERY tiny plastic princess figurines.  I let Ava play with the bigger ones, but I had to throw out all the teeny tiny little pieces.  Talk about a choking hazard!

  • my MIL wants me to make sure I have enough water bottles in the refrigerator at all times, so the baby can have water.

Not like poland spring bottles, but baby bottles filled with water.

I had to tell her that babies don't drink water anymore.

This is also the woman who says she won't baby proof her house, because they have to learn what "no" means. She has pieces of sea glass and shells EVERYWHERE.

    She's baby sitting here.
