Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Food question, To: those who have been through this

At DS's 4 month check up pedi told us to start baby food.  We have done a 3 day trial of each of the stage 1 veggies and fruits.  Now I am struggling to understand the transition into what to do next.  He is a little over 5 months old now.  Here is what we are trying today:

6:30 7 oz. bottle

9:30 Oatmeal and 5 oz. bottle

12:30 Veggie and 5 oz bottle

4:00 Fruit and 5 oz. bottle

7:30 7 oz bottle

Does this sound like the right way to go?  What are your new eaters doing?  My little guy LOVES to eat!

  • I'm definitely no expert but that seems like a lot of solids for a 5 month old.

  • That seems like way too much food for a 5 month old. Mine are almost 8 months and have a fruit for breakfast, veggie for lunch, and meat for dinner. I give solids 1 hr after each bottle.
  • I looked at Gerber's menu planner and it shows 1 fruit and 1 vegetable a day for a supported sitter.  Since I have already tried the 3 day trial of each, I thought I should start doing one and lunch and the other at dinner.  A couple of friends at my work did similar with their children. I don't know!

  • Honestly, that sounds about right, it's pretty much our routine, except, I mix a tbsp of fruit with the oatmeal, give veggies and fruit for both lunch a dinner (was doing 1/2 tub each), now he eats a whole tub of veggies, and 1/2 tub of fruit for both lunch and dinner.  I asked our pedi if that was too much food, and she said that's a good schedule.

  • That doesn't sound like too much, it sounds just about right. But, I wouldn't give LO a full jar of the fruit and veggies, I would do half a jar and do the other half tomorrow. That's how I started it. Also, my pedi suggested not to give bottles directly after solids. I forget why, this was months ago. But she said to give the bottle in between solids. HTH

  • It's hard to say whether that is too much or not since you don't list how much you're giving for each meal. If you're not giving a full 4 oz jar at every sitting then I think that's about right.
  • Go to wholesomebabyfoods.com. They have a sample food chart for each age.
