My baby's a parasyte?

Warning: Rant!
Ok, I had to let myself cool down a bit before I posted this. I think it falls in the category of "Dumb things people say to pregnant women"!

Recently I had a discussion on FB about pregnancy and a girl I know from college was like, "Well, babies are just parasytes, and I wouldn't wish pregnancy on anyone! They enter the body in an unwelcome way and they feed off you and then they exit in a bloody/traumatic way."
And then she added..."But good luck with your pregnancy."

Oh, really? Thank you so much!
I didn't reply to her, but I was pretty hot under the collar for DAYS! I can see how people would compare a baby to a parasyte, but...it is NOT an actual parasyte! And her comment on Labor reminded me of a certain disgusting siggy we've seen floating around this board. Sad
Worse part is...she's a mom! Well, she had a baby anyway. Must have been a "traumatic" experience for her I guess.

I don't really understand how a woman who has been pregnant could say such insensetive things to a pg girl!

Ah well. I'm still thrilled about my little surprise baby, and I know a lot of moms who would love to have their own little "parasyte"!
Guess that's all I wanted to rant about! Feeling much better now!

Re: My baby's a parasyte?

  • That's totally something I would say.  It's funny.  Sounds like sarcasm to me and I wouldn't think anyone would take it so seriously.  I actually called my last baby "the parasite" while I was pregnant, until we found out it was a girl and named her.  I call this one Godzilla because it has t-rex short arms and it wreaks havoc on my body.  It doesn't mean I don't love it or that I'm not thankful for it.  When we name it, I'll stop calling it Godzilla.

  • Maybe she made the comment not thinking it'd offend you but trying to be funny?  Some people have different senses of humor and its hard to read emotion in text.

I actually referred to my DD as my parasite my last pregnancy when she was being difficult (m/s, kicking my bladder, giving me food aversions).  To me it was a pet name ;) lol.

  • Well, I wouldn't have been offended if she'd been being sarcastic, but she wasn't at all! She wasn't trying to be funny either, she was serious!

lol...thats cute about the baby nicknames! :D

  • I wouldn't call the way they enter the body unwelcome....

Yeah, that was the only part that had me confused.

Otherwise, whatever. You can't get worked up everytime someone is an idiot or says something a little off. Life is just too short for that.

  • My doctor referred to the baby as a parasite when I saw her last week.  It didn't really bother me, because honestly she is kinda right.  The baby just takes and takes whatever it wants/needs from me without a thought about how it might affect my body!

I love my little parasite :)

Yea, this had me confused, but otherwise she is right. Growing a baby is very similar to have a parasite...shrugs.

  • Coming from someone who didn't get pregnant easily and then had a miscarriage, I take offense to that. Especially since she put it on FB for everyone to see.
  • Lol my doctor referred to it as a parasite too...now that is DH's pet name for the baby -GREAT

  • Im sorry but to me that was totally rude! A child is a gift from God and a parasyte is something people never want to have!!! I would not take anything to heart that she says. sounds like someone is jealous.
  • What I find offensive is people's inability to spell parasite.

Whew!  I'm glad someone finally said it!!

Why is it always that someone is jealous?

A fetus is a parasite by the very definition of the word.

Pull you heads from your collective asses and get a grip.

  • I've had several friends refer to their babies as "parasites" b/c of the similarities. They wanted their children and recognized them as blessings, but still felt that way when they were throwing up constantly or miserably pregnant. They are great moms. I'm sorry your friend offended you so much, but I really doubt she meant anything by it at all.

I have to agree with this. Nothing for you to fume about for days.

  • I refer to my baby as a parasite all of the time. Technically that is exactly what it is. Are you sure she wasn't trying to make a joke?

I even thought about saying this when I get around to announcing on FB.

"Well, the doctors found what has been making me so sick. I have a parasite. They got a good look at it today. They told me not to worry, that it would naturally work it's way out of my system by May."

Then I thought it might offend some people. I am still debating whether to say it or not.

  • A little bitchy are we??? People its not a big deal. Maybe you need to get a grip and grow up:) Thank you!!
  • thanks for the spell check girls! I looked it up online, but still couldn't get it right!

Anyway, yes, I realize I was overacting quite a bit which is exactly why I didn't respond to her comment. Because I'd rather hold my tongue and be nice than say something in the moment that I'll regret later.

Sigh. Being so up-and-down emotionally lately, its really HARD not to be mean! :)

    Oh that's really tempting...
